Max Swahn’s Background


Max Swahn graduated from Pitt in April of 2018 with a bachelor of science degree in Industrial Engineering and a concentration in Engineering Management. Over the course of his Bachelor’s degree at the University of Pittsburgh, Swahn focused on obtaining real world experience through jobs and internships as well as his studies. 


One of the most prominent and career-defining positions for Max over this time was his role as a researcher with the nanoproduct lab on campus. While working under Dr. Bedewy and Dr. Sanchez, Max Swahn worked on light-induced sequential self-folding manufacturing. He saw it as an opportunity to apply many of the concepts he learned in classes as well as expand his understanding of the real world applications necessary to be a successful researcher and engineer. 


Through the other organizations Max actively participated in, he gained skills in consulting, nonprofit organizations, project management, human factors engineering, productivity improvement, and manufacturing engineering. He has a strong background in process optimization and public speaking. Swahn sees his ability to accurately and effectively explain concepts and processes to people of all skill-levels - an essential asset to his engineering toolkit.

About Max Swahn, Pittsburgh-Based Engineer & Bodybuilder

Max Swahn is a recent engineering graduate from the University of Pittsburgh class of 2018. While attending Pitt, Max specialized in Industrial Engineering with a concentration in Engineering Management. As an engineering professional, he embodies two key components: technical wherewithal and excellent people skills. Swahn understands that in order to solve many of the tough technical problems, it often requires a teamwork approach keeping in mind that two brains are always better than one. To make the most of these opportunities, it’s essential to practice good communication and be able to clearly outline your ideas and thought processes.

As an undergraduate researcher, Max Swahn worked on projects relating to light-induced sequential self-folding (origami manufacturing) and created printable ink patterns on 2D pre-strained polystyrene for 3D expansion when exposed to varying light wavelengths.

As project manager, Max created a master database in Excel for the Bright Kids Uganda Foundation containing information on contacts, volunteers, donors, and board members. He also reduced information sources from 23 to 1 improving data access, donor retention and client time management for the organization.
