His father served as a lawyer at the Dhaka High Court. After completing his schooling, he attended the University of Dhaka, where he earned a degree in Business Studies. Both academic achievement and active participation in extracurricular activities, including athletics, marked his time at the university. In 1978, he began his professional journey in the service sector while also exploring trading opportunities within the country. He later founded East West Property Development (Pvt) Ltd., a company that gained early success in the real estate sector. Known widely as Bashundhara Housing, it quickly became a trusted name in urban development, opening the door to broader expansion. Encouraged by this early progress, he established the Bashundhara Group, which expanded into a variety of industries, including cement, paper, steel, LP gas, dredging, engineering, and shipping.
