Brian Calfano is an accomplished journalist, professor, documentary filmmaker, and author with expertise in twentieth-century political and journalism issues. Throughout his career, he has significantly contributed to the media and academic fields. He is also the first scholar-in-residence at Latakoo, which provides video management solutions to high-profile news organizations like NBC Universal, Nexstar, and Charter Spectrum. In addition to his work at Latakoo, he holds a courtesy appointment in the Department of Political Science at the University of North Texas (UNT). Brian has taken on various influential roles in television and radio throughout his journalism career. He was an anchor and political show host at KSNT 27 News, providing political coverage for Kansas markets such as Topeka, Wichita, and Kansas City. His experience at Spectrum News 1 Ohio included reporting, producing, and serving as a political analyst, where he offered studio commentary on current political developments. In Springfield, Missouri, Brian was a producer and anchor for KOLR10, where he contributed to several significant productions, including a special commemorating Missouri’s bicentennial. He also created and hosted a series focused on the US Constitution and a News Talk 560AM KWTO public affairs show. In addition, he was a media panelist in congressional debates aired by KOLR10. Brian R Calfano’s documentary, Al Primo & His Eyewitness Revolution, tells the story of the early days of television news. It has been widely acclaimed, winning numerous prestigious awards, such as Best Documentary at the 2024 Golden Nugget International Film Festival in London. The documentary was also selected for national distribution on PBS stations. His work in journalism has earned him several accolades, including First Place for Education Issues Reporting from the Ohio Society of Professional Journalists and multiple nominations and awards from the National Association of Television Arts & Sciences. Brian's accomplishments in the field of journalism culminated in the publication of his book US Political Reporting. He is also working on a new project about a former New York reporter. Brian has made lasting contributions in the academic arena, particularly as Head/Chair at the University of Cincinnati’s Department of Journalism. Under his leadership, the department introduced several key initiatives, such as a TV news studio and a collaborative project that bridged faculty and students in long-form documentary work. His efforts also led to the department’s partnership with Latakoo, allowing students to gain real-world experience in video file management. He has also taught at various other institutions, including Missouri State University, California State University, and Texas A&M University. Beyond his professional work, he is dedicated to charitable causes, donating to organizations like the ASPCA and Doctors Without Borders. He was born in New Jersey, attended the University of North Texas, and serves as an ordained deacon at the Presbyterian Church (USA).
