Chaofeng Liu

Chaofeng Liu’s career has been defined by his ability to combine statistical expertise with a deep commitment to improving human health. Born and raised in Beijing, China, he developed an early interest in understanding patterns and data. This passion led him to pursue his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Probability and Statistics at Peking University. His academic journey was marked by numerous honors, including the Outstanding Student Fellowship and the Young Scientist Award, which underscored his academic rigor and leadership capabilities. However, Chaofeng’s passion for statistics went beyond theoretical study. He was determined to apply his knowledge in a way that would create a tangible impact on healthcare. This drive led him to the United States, where he earned a Ph.D. in Biostatistics from UCLA. His education didn’t stop there, as he earned an Executive MBA from Purdue University. This combination of technical expertise and business acumen would prove invaluable as he embarked on his career in the pharmaceutical industry. Chaofeng’s professional journey spans over 22 years, and he has worked across multiple therapeutic areas, including oncology and neuroscience. He started his career at Eli Lilly, where his ability to lead and innovate quickly set him apart. His expertise in statistical methodologies and his capacity for cross-functional leadership allowed him to thrive, and he soon moved on to senior roles at several other major pharmaceutical companies, including Novartis Pharmaceuticals, Forest Laboratories, PAREXEL, and Astellas Pharmaceuticals. He was an effective leader in each role, shaping drug development programs and significantly impacting patient care. One of the most defining moments in Chaofeng’s career came at Astellas Pharmaceuticals, where he played an instrumental role in developing Gilteritinib, a first-in-class treatment for acute myeloid leukemia (AML). He led the team from early clinical trials to securing FDA Accelerated Approval, a monumental achievement that provided AML patients with a new, life-saving treatment option. His leadership helped guide the drug through regulatory approval from the FDA, PMDA, and EMA, showcasing his ability to navigate complex regulatory landscapes. Innovation is a central theme in Chaofeng’s career, particularly in clinical trial design. He has been at the forefront of developing adaptive trial designs, which allow clinical trials to adjust based on ongoing data. This method has proven to be highly effective in reducing development times and improving the efficiency of the clinical trial process, benefiting both drug developers and patients. His work in this area has been widely cited in respected journals such as The New England Journal of Medicine and Lancet Oncology. Beyond his contributions to the pharmaceutical industry, Chaofeng has significantly impacted academia. As an adjunct professor at Purdue University, he has spent over a decade teaching and mentoring students, helping them apply statistical theory to real-world clinical research. He has also contributed to the broader statistical community, serving as President and Program Chair of the ASA Northern Indiana Chapter. Even after decades of accomplishments, Chaofeng remains grounded and focused on his mission to improve healthcare outcomes. As he celebrates his 60th birthday, his dedication to advancing statistical methodologies and mentoring the next generation of statisticians continues to shape the future of biostatistics and clinical research. Chaofeng Liu’s influence in the pharmaceutical industry is profound, and his commitment to improving patient lives remains unwavering.
