G. Darrell Hulsey has built a 35-year career as an entrepreneur and executive in the healthcare management industry. Since 2016, he has served as CEO of Professional Billing, Inc. (PBI), where he leads revenue cycle and practice management services for physician practices across more than 15 states. Under his direction, the company supports a network of more than 200 practices. In addition to his professional achievements, he has been committed to philanthropy for more than three decades, giving both time and resources to support charitable causes.
His career began in 1991 when Darrell Hulsey joined CompMed/Medaphis Physician Services, now McKesson, as a Senior Operations Manager. In that role, he managed hospital-based physician practices in four states, negotiated managed care agreements with third-party payors, and helped expand the company’s business into several new regions.
After three years, Darrell co-founded Medical Management Professionals (MMP) with six partners. Over the years, he held multiple leadership positions that guided the company’s growth and success. In 1998, MMP was acquired by CBIZ, where he advanced to Vice President and later became President and CEO. When MMP returned to private ownership in 2013, he continued leading until 2016, when he transitioned to PBI as CEO. During his tenure at MMP, the company processed more than 34 million procedures, $5 billion in client charges, and collected more than $2 billion in revenues. SEC filings showed the company generated $165 million in top-line revenue and $21 million in earnings.
Throughout his time at MMP, he contributed to every area of the business, including operations, compliance, IT, finance, HR, sales, and mergers. As President and CEO from 2007 to 2013, he expanded revenue from $90 million to $165 million, consolidated 12 billing systems into four, lowered operating costs by more than 45%, and reduced staff count by approximately 35%. Earlier, as Executive Vice President of Operations for the East Region, he increased revenues by 83% and profits by 98% while expanding into 10 states.
At PBI, he has guided the company to 250% revenue growth between 2016 and 2025. Hulsey directed the acquisition and integration of five companies, achieving 30% cost savings within 18 months of each. He also introduced advanced data analytics and AI-driven billing systems, reducing claim denials by 25%, improving collections by 15% annually, and lowering administrative costs by 40%. His leadership also ensured full compliance with HIPAA and CMS standards.
For more than 35 years, he has supported religious charities, contributed to St. Jude’s Hospital, and donated to the Epilepsy Foundation of America. He is a graduate of the University of Alabama, holding a degree in Health Management with a concentration in Accounting. He has also supported his alma mater for over three decades.
Born in Haleyville, Alabama, he enjoys fishing, hunting, hiking, and traveling when not at work. Today, Darrell Hulsey continues to lead PBI while balancing his professional responsibilities with a strong dedication to service and philanthropy.
