Although Don aspired to attend the University of California, Berkeley, financial constraints led him to return to Oklahoma. He enrolled at Southern Nazarene University, where he studied philosophy and religion. Don later continued his education at the University of Oklahoma’s College of Law, earning his law degree. While in law school, he worked graveyard shifts at freight docks, further strengthening his work ethic and connection to the working class. After completing his law degree, Don was admitted to the Oklahoma Bar Association and began practicing law. At the same time, he entered the real estate investment field, partnering with his father to launch his real estate career. The early years of Don’s real estate career were marked by success, but he faced significant financial challenges when the Oklahoma oil and real estate market crashed. With millions of dollars in debt, Don faced the possibility of bankruptcy. However, instead of following that route, he dissolved his partnership with his parents, thereby protecting their assets. Through perseverance and negotiation with creditors, Don could repay his debts in full and rebuild his investment portfolio. Today, he manages a real estate exchange fund that oversees large residential portfolios and converts them into commercial properties.
