Dr. James Frizzell is a Canadian dentist who has owned and operated Frizzell Dental for more than 20 years. The practice is a family cosmetic and dental clinic that serves patients from Niagara Falls, Ontario, as well as the surrounding communities of Welland, St. Catharines, and Niagara-on-the-Lake. Through his work, he provides a wide range of dental services to individuals and families. Alongside his dental practice, he is also known for his commitment to education and advocacy related to abuse awareness and human trafficking. His professional activities combine clinical care with efforts to raise awareness about important social issues. He studied at the University of Toronto, where he completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Organic and Inorganic Chemistry. After finishing his undergraduate studies, Dr. James remained at the same institution and earned a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree. During his time in the Department of Chemistry, he received an NSERC scholarship. His research during this period was conducted under the supervision of a professor, and the work produced during that time, along with that of colleagues, was published in the Journal of Organometallic Chemistry. In 1997, he attended FaithWay Baptist College in Ajax, Ontario, where he earned a Master of Arts in Biblical Studies. His interest in continuing education remained strong throughout his career. In 2019, he completed a degree in Dental Forensics at McGill University. This additional training expanded his knowledge in forensic dentistry and its applications. Over the years, Frizzell has also participated in numerous courses and professional training programs. These have included mental health and suicide skill training, digital crime scene photography, a civil litigation workshop, strangulation prevention training, and other educational opportunities. These programs have helped him broaden his understanding of areas connected to healthcare, forensics, and the recognition of abuse. At Frizzell Dental, he works together with a team that provides dental services for patients of all ages. The clinic offers dental hygiene services, restorative dentistry, cosmetic teeth whitening, emergency dental services, and preventive dental care. Both adults and children are treated at the practice, and the clinic focuses on providing care in a comfortable environment using modern dental procedures and updated equipment. Preventive dental care is an important part of the services offered at the clinic. Treatments include periodontal therapy, sealants, tooth extraction, routine periodontal care, fluoride applications, and other services that help patients maintain healthy teeth and gums over time. Preventive care helps reduce the risk of more serious dental issues and supports long-term oral health. The practice also offers cosmetic dental treatments. These include a Zoom in-office whitening system, bonding procedures, tooth-colored fillings, porcelain crowns, inlays and onlays, and dental implants. During this time, one of his responsibilities was helping ensure that soldiers were dentally fit during the Gulf Wars. His work supported the health and readiness of military personnel. The Base Commander at Cold Lake Air Base in Alberta recognized his service and contributions. Beyond his work in dentistry, he has devoted considerable attention to raising awareness about child abuse, elder abuse, human trafficking, and intimate partner violence. His efforts focus on education and the identification of warning signs that may indicate abuse or exploitation. In August 2025, he published a book titled “Domestic Violence/Human Trafficking. From a Canadian Perspective.” The book discusses issues related to domestic violence and human trafficking and aims to help readers understand these challenges within the Canadian context. Dr. James is also the co-founder of Dentists United Against Human Trafficking. The organization works to educate dental professionals and provide guidance to help them recognize potential signs of trafficking in their patients. The group focuses on raising awareness in the dental community, training clinicians to identify warning signs, and encouraging the inclusion of human trafficking education in dental training programs. Dental professionals often interact closely with patients during treatment, which can make them aware of injuries or behavioral signs that others might not notice. Through education and outreach, he helps encourage dental teams to understand their potential role in identifying victims and responding appropriately. In January 2026, Frizzell and a colleague published an article titled “What’s Happening in Ontario: Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting” in the Oral Health Journal. He also serves as a Human Trafficking Consultant for Crime Stoppers Niagara, contributing his knowledge and guidance on awareness and prevention. He frequently gives presentations and participates in online discussions on topics related to mental health, domestic violence, and human trafficking. Healthcare professionals, including forensic nurses and other practitioners, often invite him to speak about these subjects. His presentations and podcasts include topics such as “Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting,” “Domestic Violence,” “Human Trafficking Victims: Recognition and Reaction,” “The Forensics of Suicide,” “Identifying Intraoral & Extraoral Signs of Child Abuse,” and “Cannabis Addiction and Consequences.” Through these discussions, he shares information that helps professionals better understand signs of abuse and respond to them. Dr. James's experience in forensic dentistry also includes knowledge related to bruising and bitemark analysis. Because of this expertise, his professional opinion has been requested as a witness in court cases that require forensic dental evaluation. He has been a member of the ASFO, the American Society of Forensic Odontology, for the past seven years. He is also a member of the International Association of Forensic Nurses. These professional affiliations support collaboration and ongoing learning in forensic science and healthcare. He also participates in several volunteer and community activities. In addition to serving as a consultant for Crime Stoppers Niagara, he volunteers with the organization to help raise funds. During the summer, he donates to and meets with temporary grape orchard workers from Mexico and Cuba. He also visits nursing homes, where he sings hymns with residents during sing-alongs. Earlier in his career, from 2010 to 2011, he operated a charity dental clinic in Guadalajara, Mexico, providing dental care to individuals in need. He was born in Toronto and later made Niagara Falls his home. He lives there with his wife, Sharon, and their three children. When he has free time, he enjoys musky fishing in the upper Niagara River.
