Dr. James McInnis, a lieutenant (N) and MD with certifications in family and emergency medicine, boasts a prosperous career spanning ten years in emergency and trauma care and 16 years in family medicine. He is also a devoted father of four, an enthusiastic athlete, a Navy reservist in the Canadian Armed Forces, and an active volunteer.
Born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada, and the eldest among four siblings, his engagement with sports began early. He played hockey, baseball, tennis, and golf during his youth, competing in Junior A hockey and catching the eye of the Boston Red Sox as a promising baseball pitcher. Into adulthood, he expanded his athletic pursuits to include weightlifting.
His formidable work ethic was evident from his youth; he managed a paper route at just ten years old and worked full-time at McDonald’s by thirteen.
His educational background is comprehensive. After completing his BBA at Mount Saint Vincent University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, in 1992, he took a break to travel around the United States. He later earned a BSc (Honors) in Biochemistry and Genetics from Dalhousie University in 1997 and received an Epidemiology Certification from the same institution in 2002. He enrolled in Dalhousie Medical School in 2000, obtaining his Doctor of Medicine degree in 2004. His internship and postgraduate studies in Emergency and Family Medicine were completed at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario.
