Dr. Kamran Massoumi, MD, is an ophthalmologist and the owner and president of the Oklahoma Eye Institute and Omni Surgical Center in Lawton, Oklahoma. Born in 1967 in Tehran, Iran, he comes from a family with deep political and medical roots. His paternal grandfather was a prominent military officer and politician, serving as the Minister of Agriculture during the Shah’s regime. On his mother’s side, He descends from Iranian royalty, with his maternal grandfather being only three generations removed from the King of Iran. However, his grandfather’s career in ophthalmology motivated Him to pursue a similar path.
His grandfather pioneered Iranian ophthalmology, founding the country’s first ophthalmology department and helping combat the trachoma pandemic. His grandfather’s work profoundly influenced Him, who, by age five, had already decided to become an ophthalmologist to improve vision care.
In 1983, Dr. Massoumi moved to the United States with his mother and younger sister due to the Iran-Iraq War. They settled in Marin County, California, where He adapted to his new life, learning English and adjusting to American culture. He graduated from Marin Catholic High School before attending the University of California, Berkeley, where he earned a double major in Medical Physics and Middle Eastern Studies. He later earned his medical degree from St. Louis University Medical School with distinction in research and completed his ophthalmology residency at Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio.
After completing his residency, Kamran Massoumi initially planned to return to California. However, a shortage of ophthalmologists in Western Oklahoma led him to join the BVA practice in 2002. His grandfather’s dedication to public service motivated him to stay in the region. He introduced advanced technology, expanded services, and founded the Oklahoma Eye Institute in 2014. The institute brought specialties such as retinal and plastic surgery to the area, and He continues to provide cataract, glaucoma, and laser treatments to local patients.
Dr. Massoumi also recognized the need for local surgical facilities and opened the Omni Surgical Center in Lawton and an office-based operating room in Elk City, providing patients with easier access to care.
His long-term goal is to attract more ophthalmologists to Western Oklahoma, ensuring the region remains self-sufficient in vision care.
Outside of his professional life, He is married and has two daughters. The family shares a passion for martial arts, with each member holding a black belt in Taekwondo. His youngest daughter holds a second-degree black belt. He enjoys traveling and has participated in medical mission trips, including one to Vietnam, where he performed eye surgeries to restore vision for those in need.
Dr. Kamran Massoumi’s work has had a lasting impact on Western Oklahoma’s access to ophthalmology services. His efforts have allowed the region to meet its vision care needs without relying on larger cities, and he continues to expand access to high-quality care for his community.
