Dr. Kevin Schoenfelder, an esteemed orthopedic spine surgeon, recently retired after a laudable 45-year career, during which he made significant contributions to the advancement of spine and musculoskeletal medicine. His dedication to improving surgical techniques and patient care has garnered him respect and numerous accolades within the medical community.
Kevin's journey began in Minnesota, where he developed an early passion for biology. He pursued this interest at Macalester College in St. Paul, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology in 1974. He furthered his education at the University of Minnesota, earning a Master's in Quantitative Genetics in 1975. His outstanding academic performance led him to the University of Minnesota Medical School, where he obtained his Doctor of Medicine (MD) in 1979. During his time there, he was recognized for his scholarly excellence and inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honors Society.
Dr. Schoenfelder's postgraduate education included an internship at the University of California, San Francisco, from 1979 to 1980, followed by a residency in orthopedic surgery at the University of Washington, which he completed in 1984. His pioneering research marked his residency, earning him the Best Resident Paper award in 1984.
Following his residency, Kevin embarked on a teaching career as an Instructor of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Washington. His expertise and dedication to education led him abroad as a Traveling Faculty member at the University of Hokkaido in Japan in 1984 and to a fellowship at the University of Hong Kong in 1985, where he specialized in spine and pediatric orthopedics.
Throughout his career, Dr. Schoenfelder was deeply involved in research that pushed the boundaries of orthopedic surgery. His work on spinal fusion techniques and developing the anterior fixation of spinal fractures using the Kaneda device brought him international recognition and respect at prestigious medical forums such as the Scoliosis Research Society.
In 1985, Kevin began practicing privately at Puget Sound Spine Associates, where he used his expertise to treat complex spinal conditions. His career later took him to the Franciscan Spine Group in 2008, where he continued to provide exceptional care until his retirement in 2018. During his time there, he consistently earned 5-star Patient Satisfaction Awards every quarter from 2008 to 2018, a testament to his skill and compassion.
Orthopedic surgery focuses on conditions involving the musculoskeletal system, and Dr. Schoenfelder specializes in procedures that improve mobility and alleviate pain for his patients, enhancing their quality of life.
