Dr. Rema

Professor of Education
Rema Reynolds Vassar, PhD has committed her career to advancing educational equity, focusing primarily on the needs of marginalized communities. She is deeply passionate about ensuring that all students, regardless of their background, have access to the support and resources they need to succeed. Dr. Rema’s expertise spans educational leadership, school culture, and organizational development. She has worked in various academic environments in the U.S. and abroad, helping educators, administrators, and counselors address critical issues related to race, gender, and class within schools. Her work focuses on understanding how policies and practices impact student outcomes and advocates for creating more inclusive and equitable educational spaces for underserved populations. With over 20 years of experience in K-12 education, Rema Vassar has served as a teacher, counselor, and administrator in various roles. Currently, she is focused on improving the wellness of school communities by fostering collaboration between students, parents, and educators. She also serves on the Michigan State University Board of Trustees and teaches in the Educational Leadership program at Wayne State University. Vassar believes in the power of education to bring about positive social change. Throughout her career, she has worked to create spaces where communities can come together to address challenges in education. Her research and presentations have been shared at conferences across the U.S. and over 20 countries, where she advocates for inclusive leadership and practices prioritizing equity for all students. In 2021, Dr. Rema founded Centering Black Children in Education (CBCE), an initiative focusing on Black children's academic and emotional success. The CBCE hosts an annual virtual conference that brings educators, parents, and community members together to discuss Black children's unique challenges in education and advocate for systemic change. The conference serves as a platform to elevate the voices of Black children and push for meaningful transformation within the educational system. Vassar also founded Leading Well, a program that empowers Black women in educational leadership. Through mentorship and support, Leading Well helps these women build strong networks and thrive in their roles. She is also involved in the Sankofa Scholarship Foundation, which provides scholarships to students pursuing higher education. Rema Vassar’s passion for education was instilled by her mother, who emphasized the importance of learning from a young age. This influence continues to guide her work as she strives to build a more inclusive educational system where all students have the opportunity to succeed.
