Retired physician, Community Activist, Entrepreneur (Maintenance Company), Founder of Non-Profit
Dr. Morris Brown, a native of Anniston, Alabama, born in 1948, epitomizes dedication and leadership in medicine and community service. As the fourth of eight children to a mother who progressed from a sharecropper to a nurse’s aide and a father who combined laboring with Baptist preaching, Dr. Brown’s early life was steeped in resilience and a commitment to social justice. The racial challenges of his youth, including witnessing the repercussions of civil rights conflicts in his hometown, profoundly shaped his aspirations and career trajectory. From an early age, Dr. Brown was exposed to the professional world, initially working as a bagger and cashier, where he broke racial barriers in employment. These formative experiences instilled in him a robust work ethic and solidified his resolve to pursue medicine—a field he was drawn to through his assistance at the medical office where his mother worked. He observed that the realities of inequality and injustice nurtured this early interest in healthcare, motivating him to effect change through a medical career. Excelling academically, Dr. Brown graduated third in his class from Cobb Avenue High School in Anniston and served as class president. He furthered his education at Knoxville College, a historically black liberal arts college in Tennessee, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Biology. While at Knoxville, he was an active Omega Psi Phi fraternity member and engaged deeply in student government, sharpening his leadership skills. He pursued his medical degree at Meharry Medical School in Nashville, Tennessee, one of the country’s four Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) dedicated to medical training. His education at Meharry was marked by significant clinical and research experiences, preparing him well for his subsequent roles in the medical field. Upon graduating in 1974, Dr. Brown joined the United States Air Force Medical Corps as the Director of Aerospace Medicine. His military service enabled him to provide critical healthcare services across various locations, enhancing his medical expertise and leadership capabilities. After his service, Dr. Morris Brown, Dayton, contributed significantly to rebuilding efforts at Central State University following extensive tornado damage. His leadership in securing funds for the community health center restoration project showcased his dedication to community service and healthcare. Settling in Dayton, Ohio, Dr. Brown completed his residency in Family Medicine at Wright State Medical School/Miami Valley Hospital. Over the next 35 years, he dedicated his career to serving marginalized communities, his practice growing to over 10,000 patients due to his commitment to healthcare equity. Since retiring in 2018, Dr. Morris Brown, Ohio, has continued to lead and inspire through his work with the nonprofit “Above the Law,” which focuses on criminal justice reform and support for nonviolent youth. He also serves as a Certified Medical Legal Consultant and the Chief Financial Officer of Central Solutions LLC, a firm innovating in commercial maintenance to enhance business strategies. Dr. Brown’s commitment to medicine and community service has earned him numerous accolades, and he remains a respected figure in his professional and personal life. His leisure activities include chess, jazz, theater, and art, reflecting a life rich with cultural engagement and community devotion.
