Edward Joseph Silvio Picardi, MD, FACS, DABS, is a general surgeon with over three decades of experience in medicine and surgery. His career has spanned multiple states and countries, where he has made significant contributions to trauma surgery, advanced laparoscopic procedures, and volunteer medical missions. Dr. Picardi is renowned for his commitment to patient care, advocacy for life causes, and dedication to serving both his local community and underserved populations worldwide.
Born on February 15, 1957, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, his early interest in medicine led him to the University of Pennsylvania, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Biomedical Engineering with honors in 1979. His passion for medicine propelled him to obtain a Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from Hahnemann University in 1983.
After medical school, he commenced his surgical training at Wright-State University and served at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. From June 1983 to June 1989, he completed his residency in surgery, gaining extensive experience in a variety of surgical techniques. In July 1989, he was appointed as a staff surgeon at Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota, serving as a Major in the United States Air Force Medical Corps during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
After his military service in 1992, he transitioned to civilian practice, establishing a private practice in Rapid City, South Dakota. Over the next two decades, he emerged as a leading general surgeon in the region, recognized with the Outstanding Surgeon Award from the South Dakota Chapter of the American College of Surgeons in 2001. He also served as President of this chapter from 1999 to 2000 and played a critical role in developing the statewide trauma system, ensuring residents had access to high-quality emergency care.
In 2018, he moved to Steubenville, Ohio, joining Trinity Health Systems, part of the Catholic Health Initiative. There, he has continued to excel, bringing his expertise in advanced laparoscopic surgery and robotics to the hospital, performing over 250 robotic surgeries. He also serves as a trauma consultant for the regional EMS, contributing to the development of trauma care and advancing the hospital toward an ACSCOT trauma III designation.
In addition to his clinical work, he has made significant contributions to medical research. His graduate research includes a study on the effects of streptokinase on experimental mesenteric venous thrombosis, presented at the University Surgeons Meeting in 1989. He has authored numerous papers on topics such as laparoscopic spinal fusion and has pioneered techniques in laparoscopic surgery.
A staunch pro-life advocate, his commitment has led him into political advocacy, where he has worked to protect the rights of the unborn, facing significant challenges and opposition. Despite these, he remains dedicated to his cause, advocating for life at all stages.
His service extends beyond the U.S. through medical missions with his wife, providing vital medical aid in Western Africa. Beyond his professional commitments, Edward Picardi enjoys the outdoors with his wife, finding peace and rejuvenation in nature through hiking and camping.
