Frontier Galvanizing
Frontier Galvanizing, legally known as Frontier Hot-Dip Galvanizing, Inc., has represented quality and durability in corrosion protection for more than 75 years. Based in Buffalo, the company provides hot-dip galvanizing services to industries that form the foundation of modern infrastructure. From bridges and highways to stadiums and utilities, Frontier strengthens the steel that supports essential systems relied on by communities every day.
The business has grown from a small local operation into a trusted partner on both domestic and international projects. Its reputation is rooted in craftsmanship, environmental responsibility, and client trust. Notably, Frontier received the Excellence in Hot-Dip Galvanizing Award from the American Galvanizers Association in 1998 for its work on Franklinville Bridge #31 in New York. These recognitions reflect decades of expertise and commitment to technical Excellence.
Founded in 1948 on Austin Street in Buffalo, the company quickly earned a reputation for dependable service. By the late 1960s, growing industrial demand made it clear that larger facilities and greater capacity were needed. In 1970, Ray V. Pierce and shareholders purchased the company, setting a new course for expansion. Soon after, operations relocated to 1740 Elmwood Avenue, where an improved workflow and additional space supported growth.
Ray was later joined by his brother, Lewis G. Pierce. Together, they expanded capacity through strategic land acquisitions, indoor galvanizing facilities, and outdoor laydown yards. This enabled the company to manage larger steel assemblies and higher order volumes while meeting strict construction schedules. As demand increased, the workforce grew to about 40 full-time employees, serving state agencies, utilities, contractors, and energy providers.
Frontier has invested consistently in process improvements and sustainability. Technologies such as continuous flux treatment, hydrochloric acid regeneration, and hex-free passivation have boosted efficiency while reducing environmental impact. Active membership in the American Galvanizers Association and the Galvanizers Association UK & Ireland ensures access to research, regulatory updates, and best practices that keep operations forward-looking and adaptive.
The company’s portfolio includes high-profile projects such as the Daytona Motor Speedway, the Peace Bridge, Boston’s Green Line Extension, the Queensboro Bridge, and Buffalo’s new Highmark Stadium. Millions of pounds of galvanized steel from Buffalo have been shipped to Australia, Canada, Jamaica, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom, demonstrating global confidence in Frontier’s quality standards.
Leadership today remains in the Pierce family, with Lewis G. Pierce and his son, Robert V. Pierce, guiding the business. They balance proven methods with modern innovations to strengthen client relationships and explore emerging markets. With its clear vision, Frontier Galvanizing continues to uphold quality, safety, and environmental stewardship, ensuring every project meets the enduring standards set since 1948.
