Gunawan Jusuf also contributes to the Sugar Group Schools, which was founded by his late mother and is now run by his sister Purati Lee.
The charity was created in 2005 to provide education to the children of sugarcane field workers. While these schools are located in rural areas, they operate differently from traditional Indonesian rural schools. The rooms are well-lit and equipped with air conditioning and WiFi, and the multilingual programs enable children to reach the polytechnic level.
The Sugar Group Schools provide free education to more than 1,900 children of Sugar Group employees. Free uniforms, backpacks, shoes, and two daily meals and snacks are provided for children. Full college scholarships are awarded to students with the highest academic achievement.
