Jonathan Pasternak has developed one of the highest volume debtor bankruptcy practices in the country, built on more than 30 years of experience in bankruptcy and restructuring law. As a bankruptcy attorney and restructuring consultant, he has guided clients through complex financial transactions, distressed debt matters, and corporate reorganization proceedings. His work in both legal and advisory roles has enabled him to build strong professional relationships with companies, lenders, investors, fiduciaries, and court-appointed representatives involved in insolvency cases.
Over a 36-year career in bankruptcy and corporate restructuring, Jonathan has represented parties across many industries. His primary focus has been the reorganization of private and public companies facing financial instability. He has advised hundreds of individual and corporate clients, helping them stabilize operations, restructure obligations, and navigate formal insolvency proceedings.
His experience includes debtor and creditor representation, negotiated workouts, recapitalizations, asset sales, and complex Chapter 11 bankruptcy cases. Pasternak has worked closely with business owners, institutional stakeholders, and fiduciaries tasked with overseeing distressed enterprises. In each engagement, he has combined financial analysis with legal strategy, while keeping business objectives and operational realities in focus.
Jonathan has also handled commercial real estate and finance-related restructuring. His work has addressed distressed property assets, debt associated with real estate portfolios, and transaction-driven reorganizations. Whether managing out-of-court resolutions or court-supervised restructuring proceedings, he has maintained a disciplined and practical approach.
For more than 20 years, Pasternak led his own boutique bankruptcy law firm. During that period, the firm became one of the leading Chapter 11 debtor practices in the nation by case volume. He oversaw firm operations while maintaining an active caseload, guiding clients and coordinating with professionals and court institutions throughout complex insolvency matters.
His work in bankruptcy and restructuring has earned industry recognition. In 2017, Jonathan was named YJP Professional of the Year for his contributions to insolvency initiatives. He was consistently cited among the top 20 bankruptcy lawyers in the nation by case volume and was recognized as a Super Lawyer for more than 15 consecutive years. He has lectured at insolvency conferences and at his former secondary school and law school. He has also appeared on the radio and television to discuss large-scale bankruptcy proceedings.
Jonathan graduated cum laude from The Pingry School in 1981 and from Brown University in 1985, where he majored in American History and Literature. He served as a class representative for both institutions and continues to support alumni initiatives. His spouse and two of his three children are graduates of Brown University, reflecting a continued family connection.
Pasternak contributes to charitable and educational efforts, including food and clothing drives and community programs in Tenafly, New Jersey, where he resides. For 11 years, he served on the Board of Trustees of Temple Sinai of Bergen County, overseeing governance and fiduciary responsibilities. He has also provided pro bono legal services to individuals, small businesses, and nonprofit organizations.
Outside of his legal work, he is an accomplished musician and performer known within the bankruptcy community. Music remains an active pursuit that reflects preparation, focus, and discipline. He is also recognized as an archivist and field recorder of live music events. Throughout his long career in bankruptcy, restructuring, commercial real estate, and distressed debt matters, Jonathan Pasternak has remained committed to careful judgment and steady leadership, principles that continue to guide him.
