Ensuring daily attendance to all patients within the respective wards and updating patient files and treatment sheets; an average of 45 patients a day.
Responding promptly to all medical and surgical emergencies including but not limited to obstetric/gynecological and trauma patients. Case in point; in my 13 weeks in Surgery and Orthopedics, I was able to successfully resuscitate 34 trauma patients at the accidents and emergency department
Maintaining accurate documentation of patient care in medical records.
Conducting regular ward rounds in various departments, including maternity, medical, pediatrics, and surgery with the assistance of medical officers and consultants
Covering night calls as the 1st medic on call at least 3 nights a week mainly handling emergency cases especially trauma cases. This also involves consulting senior medical officers and consultants in complex scenarios ensuring timely escalation of patient management
Working hand-in-hand with nurses, clinical officers and other health cadres to deliver proper health care.
Performing and assisting in elective and emergency obstetric/gynecological procedures. For instance, in my 13 weeks in the department, I was able to lead 63 caesarean sections and 8 ruptured ectopic pregnancies saving 70 out of the 71 pregnant mothers.
Conducting and assisting in both elective and emergency surgical procedures in the operating theater. Case in point, in my 13wks in surgery/orthopedics department, I was able to lead my team in 6 appendicectomy surgeries and assist in more than 30 major general surgeries such as thyroidectomy
Facilitating timely referrals as needed.
Assisting in the running of special clinics on a weekly basis, such as SOPC, GOPC, MOPC, and POPC.
Helping in medical legal cases, including completing P3 forms and performing rape kits. This includes; ensuring prompt and comprehensive care for survivors of sexual assault in the Gender-Based Violence (GBV) center and offering guidance and counselling services to victims.
Collecting laboratory samples and following up on the results.
Admitting and discharging patients, including death certification of dead patients.
Collecting data, coming up with reports and participating in monthly mortality meetings and discussions where I get to brainstorm with team members on areas to improve or work on in patient care to reduce patient mortalities.
Participating in CMEs. For example, I was able to attend a CME on Postpartum hemorrhage where we were taught on how to use the pneumatic antishock garment which directly helped save the lives of 3 mothers who had presented with postpartum hemorrhage after delivery at different hospitals.
