Dr. Martin Stewart Karp has dedicated his life’s work to strengthening education through direct involvement, leadership, and a consistent focus on student success. With more than 30 years of experience, he has served as a teacher, school leader, policymaker, and community advocate, always working toward practical solutions that make a real difference for young people.
He holds a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership, an M.Ed., and a B.B.A. in Marketing from the University of Miami, as well as an M.S./M.B.A. from Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications. This blend of academic training in education, business, and communications has helped him navigate the complexities of both classroom instruction and large-scale educational systems.
Martin Karp began in the classroom, where he developed programs that encouraged engagement and inclusivity. At Biscayne Elementary, he established a gifted program that included students from both public and private schools, promoting collaboration across educational sectors. In his role as an Exceptional Student Education (E.S.E.) specialist and department chairperson, he organized fairs that celebrated the accomplishments of students with special needs. In partnership with Lehrman Community Day School, he co-developed one of the district’s earliest public-private gifted education programs, offering students from different school systems a shared, enriched academic environment.
His belief that learning should be visible and celebrated led him to create WKDZ Kids’ World, a weekly educational television program highlighting student projects and classroom activities. The show, which aired on Cable TAP and WLRN-TV Channel 17, reflected his commitment to giving students a platform to showcase their work.
In 2004, Dr. Karp was elected to the Miami-Dade County School Board, where he served four consecutive terms until 2020. His work on the board included initiatives to improve school health, introduce later start times for high schools, expand gifted and science education, strengthen services for students with disabilities, and implement vaping prevention programs. Throughout his tenure, his decisions were guided by the goal of improving the learning environment for all students.
Currently, Martin Karp is Chief of Staff to the Head of Schools for a consortium affiliated with Talmudic University. In this role, he manages contracts, oversees operations, develops strategy, and supports academic programs from elementary through post-secondary levels. At Yeshiva Elementary School, he founded the Success Center, a program designed for students who excel in nontraditional learning settings. The center combines essential reading, writing, and math instruction with STEM activities, guest speakers, and enrichment programs tailored to each student’s strengths.
His dedication to service extends beyond education. Since 1995, he has partnered with Miami-Dade Animal Services and the Humane Society through the H.O.P.E. Contest, which engages students in promoting animal welfare. He has also served in Scouting USA since the 1980s, taking on roles such as Assistant Scoutmaster, Cubmaster, and Advancement Chairman to guide youth in leadership and life skills.
Dr. Karp has been an active member of the WLRN Community Advisory Board for over 16 years, reviewing and refining lesson plans linked to award-winning documentaries. He has also contributed his expertise to The Children’s Trust, the New World School of the Arts, and other organizations committed to community growth and education.
His work has been recognized with numerous honors, including the Yeshiva Elementary/Middle/Aderes Schools Educational Leadership Award, Cervantes Outstanding Educator Award, Guardian of Youth Philanthropy Award, Miami Beach Senior High School Hall of Fame induction, Helping Hands Award, People, Pets & Vets Award, PTA/PTSA Lifetime Legacy Award, and Teacher of the Year Award. He has also served multiple terms as Vice Chair of the Miami-Dade School Board.
Through op-eds in the Miami Herald, appearances on television and radio, and speaking engagements at forums and conferences, Dr. Karp has shared his insights on topics such as mental health in schools, opioid awareness, sound educational policy, and managing change in large school systems. His approach is straightforward, student-focused, and free from political agendas.
For Dr. Martin Karp, the greatest measure of success lies in the students whose opportunities have expanded, the programs that have created meaningful change, and the communities that have grown stronger through his work. Together with his wife Danielle, he is raising three sons — Herschel, Benjamin, and Samson Raphael — who are growing up with the same values of education, service, and community that have defined his career.
