Matthew Bissell
Matthew Bissell’s story is one of consistency, effort, and a willingness to serve in many different capacities over time. Born in Oakland, California, in 1973, he has built a professional life that crosses financial consulting, social services, and a broad range of hands-on roles. His academic foundation includes a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Pitzer College and international study at the University of Sussex. Beyond his work, he is a father of two who values family involvement and continues to maintain a strong interest in sports and community engagement.
Matthew was born on November 20, 1973, at Oakland Kaiser Hospital in Oakland, California. He is the son of Peter and Nancy Bissell. His father spent multiple decades working as a longshoreman in the Bay Area and was a proud member of the ILWU. His mother followed a career path that combined education and entrepreneurship, beginning as a Special Education Teacher and later owning and operating a local clothing store. He grew up with one sister in a household grounded in support, routine, and shared responsibility. Much of his childhood was spent with friends and participating in organized youth sports. Growing up in the Bay Area allowed him to play football, baseball, and soccer year-round, which helped him develop discipline, teamwork, and consistency early in his life.
From 1991 to 1995, Matthew attended Pitzer College in Claremont, California, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. While completing his degree, he was also a student-athlete, competing on the Pomona/Pitzer combined baseball and football teams. In 1994, he earned First Team All-SCIAC honors in football, contributing as a defensive end, punter, and place kicker. Balancing academics with athletics required strong time management and focus, lessons that would later carry into his professional life. That same year, he studied abroad at the University of Sussex in Brighton, England. During this semester, he traveled through Europe, Africa, and Asia, visiting Spain, Morocco, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Romania, Germany, and the Netherlands. These experiences exposed him to different cultures and broadened his perspective. After completing his undergraduate studies, he pursued additional academic coursework at Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, California.
Matthew’s career reflects experience across many industries. Early work in apparel sales helped him build customer service and communication skills. He also worked as a gardener and landscaper, a waiter, a truck driver trainer, and a FedEx and UPS delivery driver. Over time, he expanded into roles such as travel agent, caregiver, and social worker. Each position required adaptability, organization, and problem-solving, whether coordinating logistics, assisting individuals with daily needs, or navigating complex social situations.
In more recent years, Matthew has focused on community-centered support roles. From October 2023 to December 2024, he served as a Water-Based Rehousing Stabilization Specialist for Episcopal Community Services in San Francisco. He visited clients on Richardson Bay twice weekly, providing supplies, guidance, and advocacy while coordinating with local authorities. In December 2024, he began working as an In-Home Support Specialist with In-Home Support Services in Oakland, California. In this role, he assists clients with activities of daily living, including meal preparation, exercise routines, and medication support, while maintaining regular communication with family members.
In July 2025, Matthew transitioned into financial consulting by joining The Broker Group in Richmond, California, as a Financial Consultant. He provides guidance on life insurance and retirement planning, helping clients understand their options and plan for long-term financial stability.
Outside of his professional responsibilities, Matthew Bissell places strong importance on family and community involvement. He actively volunteers in his children’s activities, including coaching sports teams, serving as a head parent for clubs, and supporting school programs. He has also contributed time and resources to organizations such as the University of California, Berkeley; the Dunn School; San Francisco Day School; Prospect Sierra School; Goodwill; the Salvation Army; and Pitzer College. Through steady involvement in work, family life, and volunteer efforts, he continues to approach each role with care, balance, and a genuine commitment to supporting others.
