Throughout his life, Michael D. Hopkins has pursued work that blends operational leadership with practical innovation. His professional path includes experience as an author, inventor, and CEO, shaped by a broad set of roles that taught him how to identify needs and develop solutions. The Aeropod, one of his key inventions, traces its origins back to his years spent living and traveling through Europe. During that time, he noticed how certain airports offered designated rest areas for travelers. This idea would later influence his work in the United States and inspire the creation of Napstar.
Michael’s upbringing took place primarily overseas. He attended Zweibrücken Air Force High School in Germany and graduated in 1985. Living abroad exposed him to many different cultures and travel environments, strengthening his understanding of how airports support passengers. These early insights stayed with him as he returned to the United States and pursued higher education. He enrolled at the University of Missouri in St. Louis, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in 1990.
His career began in 1989 when he joined United Parcel Service. Michael worked in St. Louis and later in Denver, Colorado, serving as a Hub Operations Supervisor. He was responsible for managing sales pickup routes, coordinating start times for large teams, and ensuring operations ran smoothly. His efforts reduced service failures by 40 percent, reflecting his ability to improve organizational processes and maintain consistency under pressure. He later served as an Outbound Primary Sort Supervisor, working closely with employees who routed and sorted large volumes of packages. These responsibilities strengthened his abilities in logistics, safety oversight, and team coordination. His contributions earned him Safety and Service Awards in 1991, 1993, 1994, 1997, and 1998.
In January 2005, Michael founded Napstar, LLC in Denver. As owner and manager, he directed business development efforts, research initiatives, and strategic marketing plans. It was during this period that he developed the Aeropod. His idea came from the contrast he observed between European and American airports—specifically, the lack of private restrooms in the United States. To further communicate his vision and its purpose, he later authored The Denver Aeropod.
Expanding his career even further, Michael joined Risc Management Security Investigator Company and Community Security Company LLC in August 2017. As Operations Manager, he contributed to risk assessments, executive protective assignments, and advanced planning. His role also included HR responsibilities, organizing training for mental health clinic security teams, and helping with the certification of security guards for the City and County of Denver.
In December 2019, he returned to UPS as an Operations Manager in Denver, overseeing inbound operations at the internal hub and supporting feeder department functions. His long-standing work earned him service recognition during the Democratic National Convention in 2008, as well as President’s Club Awards in 2002, 2003, and 2005.
As Napstar continued to grow, Michael collaborated with designer and developer Jono Isbell, CEO of Hollow(arch). Their development proposal, dated October 7, 2025, described a refined Napstar prototype built with lightweight structural materials, modular construction, CNC-routed elements, and high-quality finishes. The design ensures simple flat shipping, efficient assembly, and straightforward maintenance.
Beyond his professional commitments, Michael Hopkins from Denver has contributed to community support programs, particularly through involvement with mental health clinics. In his personal life, he maintains an active interest in health and fitness, helping him balance the demands of his work. Today, he continues to live in Denver, Colorado, remaining dedicated to his ideas, his company, and the community he serves.
