Dr. Nishi Patel, M.D., is a highly accomplished cardiovascular specialist, known for his expertise in advanced heart failure and cardiac critical care at WellSpan York Hospital in York, Pennsylvania. As the National Director of Cardiac Imaging for Access Physicians/SOC Telemedicine, Dr. Patel leads efforts to make advanced cardiac imaging and specialized cardiovascular care accessible to patients in rural and underserved communities nationwide.
Dr. Patel’s academic foundation was laid at Drexel University, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in Biology in 2009 and his Doctor of Medicine in 2013. He completed his internship and residency at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, before pursuing fellowship training in Cardiovascular Disease and advanced heart failure and transplant cardiology at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. Dr. Patel holds multiple board certifications, including Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, Advanced Heart Failure & Transplant Cardiology, Echocardiography, Cardiac Computed Tomography (CT), and Nuclear Cardiology.
At WellSpan York Hospital, Dr. Patel is at the forefront of providing cutting-edge care to patients with complex cardiac conditions. He specializes in lifesaving interventions for advanced heart failure, including mechanical circulatory support devices such as ECMO, Impella, and LVAD. Under his leadership, the hospital’s heart failure program has expanded, offering comprehensive care that ranges from intensive treatment in the ICU to innovative post-discharge support. Dr. Patel has played a pivotal role in developing protocols for virtual and molecular autopsies of sudden cardiac deaths, helping families understand inherited risks and promoting preventive care through remote monitoring technologies, such as CardioMEMS.
Dr. Patel’s influence extends beyond the local community. As National Director of Cardiac Imaging for Access Telecare, he spearheads national programs to enhance the availability of expert cardiac imaging—primarily echocardiography and cardiac CT—in smaller hospitals that traditionally lack subspecialty expertise. His commitment to telemedicine ensures that more patients receive high-quality, timely cardiac diagnostics and interventions without having to leave their communities.
In addition to his clinical roles, Dr. Patel is an active researcher. He began his research journey during residency, studying heart failure and arrhythmias in animal models, and has since published and presented extensively on topics such as mechanical support devices, cardiac transplantation, and genomics in cardiology. His work has appeared in respected journals, and he recently received the Zoll Foundation Research Grant for investigating genomics in sudden cardiac arrest.
Nishi Patel is also an Associate Professor of Medicine at Drexel University College of Medicine and has received the Golden Apple Award for teaching excellence. He is an editor and peer reviewer for several top cardiology publications and remains active in professional societies and charitable initiatives. Outside of medicine, Dr. Patel enjoys martial arts, outdoor activities, and supporting community health efforts.
