Patrick Timothy Tjhai, Patrick Tsai, Cai Chang-fu (蔡常福); these are among the names I've gone by in my academic, professional, and personal lives. They reflect not a crisis of identity as an Indonesian of Chinese descent, but rather an embrace of my diverse and multicoloured cultural heritage and the multifaceted perspectives I can provide. I'm a proud graduate of National Taiwan Normal University, Taiwan's premier higher education institution for training the next generation of teachers and educators. As an undergraduate student, I majored in Teaching Chinese as a Second Language and minored in English Literature. While studying to be a teacher, I cultivated an expansive portfolio of work experience centred around the oft underestimated but invaluable art of education. I am no stranger to sitting in both the driver's seat as a foreign language (Chinese and English) teacher/tutor as well as riding shotgun as a teaching assistant (TA) I did not limit the jobs I pursued just to education; among the highlights of my non-academic work experiences include serving on the committee of my university's Indonesian student body as head of Human Resources (HR), translating documents for Indonesia's de-facto embassy to Taiwan, and delivering guided tours to patrons at the world famous National Taiwan Museum. In Indonesia, our national motto, Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, translates to "Strength in Unity". I too, believe that only when we work together can we make our world a better place for our children and future generations to come.
