Since his appointment in 2021, Sam Yoon has been the Chief of the Division of Surgical Oncology and Vice-Chair of Surgical Oncology Research and Education at Columbia University Irving Medical Center. His clinical focus is on sarcomas, stomach and gastroesophageal junction cancers, and gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs). He is at the forefront of clinical trials. He is a prominent figure at international medical conferences discussing the urgent need for advances in the treatment of gastric cancer, which results in over 750,000 deaths globally from more than a million new cases each year. He is highly regarded for his patient-centered approach, drawing patients from throughout the tri-state area. His medical excellence has been recognized repeatedly, earning him spots on the Best Doctors in America list in 2010-2011 and from 2017 to 2020. He offers consultations at the CUIMC/Herbert Irving Pavilion in New York City and sees patients in Bronxville, Cortland Manor in New York, and Englewood, New Jersey. Yoon completed his undergraduate education at Harvard University and his medical degree from the University of California, San Diego. His advanced training continued with a general surgery residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and a fellowship in surgical oncology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, renowned for its comprehensive cancer care and research. Before his current roles, he was an attending surgeon at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s Division of Gastric and Mixed Tumors and was a professor at Weill Cornell Medical College. Additionally, he was an associate professor at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School before his move in 2012. Known for pioneering work in minimally invasive robotic surgery, he has performed over 300 procedures, including robotic gastrectomies. This approach utilizes the latest surgical technology to minimize incisions, enhance precision, and reduce recovery times. His scholarly contributions include more than 150 published research articles, book chapters, and reviews. He is also involved in significant research funded by prominent organizations to develop early diagnostic tests and innovative treatments for cancer. Dr. Sam Yoon’s dedication to improving surgical techniques and patient outcomes continues to influence the fields of surgical oncology and medical education profoundly.
