A strong resume can help grab the attention of employers and can be the key to landing an interview. But "what is a resume?" you might ask. In this blog post, we'll share with you all-thing resumes, from its definition and types to writing tips and best practices for creating a compelling one, whether you are a recent graduate or already an experienced professional, or even someone who wants to transition to a new career, this blog will provide you with the essential knowledge and resume builder tools to create a standout resume.Table of Contents What Is a Resume? How to Choose the Best Resume Format 11 Essential Resume Section (+Examples) Which Resume Templates Should I Use? 5 Writing Tips for a Convincing Resume Example of a Good Resume KeyTakeaways What Is a Resume? The term resume (or résumé) is a French-derive word that means a summary, and that's essentially what a resume is: a one-page document summarizing applicants' skills, work experience, educational background, and information that are relevant to the job you're applying for. With that being said, “what is the primary purpose of a resume,” then, you might ask? Straightforwardly, a resume is often used to help you get a job, isn't it? True, but not really. While it won't guarantee employment, a well-crafted resume can help you secure an interview by showcasing your skills and qualifications. This one-page document is your opportunity to make a positive first impression, sell yourself, and convince your potential employers that you're the most suitable candidate for the vacancy, and demonstrate what you can bring to the table. Although it's recommended to tailor your resume to each job you apply for, some core elements should always be present. Resume vs. CV: What Are the Main Differences? In some countries, the term "resume" is often used interchangeably with "curriculum vitae" (CV) despite their slight differences: while a resume is a summary of your relevant skills and qualifications for a particular position, a CV is more about your course of life as it contains a detailed academic record that includes all of your professional experiences, certifications, publications, and achievement.A simpler curriculum vitae's definition is that CVs are commonly used by those pursuing fellowships, grants, postdoctoral positions, teaching or research positions at the post-secondary level, or in high-level research positions in the industry. While graduate school applications may request a CV, they generally prefer a resume that includes details of research projects and publications.Suppose you plan to apply for both academic and private or public sector industries; you'll need to create both documents. If you're unsure which document to submit for a job application, it's always best to ask for clarification. How to Choose the Best Resume Format There are three main resume formats—chronological, functional, and combination resume. Each format serves different purposes based on work history and the job applied for. Let's break down the definition of each so that you can pick the most suitable format that suits your needs best. 1. Reverse chronological resume Resume Format: Reverse ChronologicalResume Format A chronological resume, also known as a reverse chronological resume,is a resume format that lists your work experience from the latest to the oldest. By highlighting the most recent experience, employers can check if you've been working in the same industry or a similar position so that they can save training effort after hire. The more relevant you are, the more competitive edge you gain. This resume is most suitable for those who have been working in the same industry or the same profession and have years of experience. Fresh grads who have several internship experiences can also leverage this resume format, as it's one of the most common resume types.ProsRecruiters are often familiar with this resume format.Recruiters can scan through the highlighted professional experience more easily. You can showcase your work experience and achievements in the most logical way.ConsThe layout and format are commonly used, which makes it hard to stand out, especially in the creative industry. There is not much emphasis on one’s relevant skills and capabilities.Job-changing histories and employment gaps are accentuated. 2. Functional resume Resume Format: Functional Resume Format If you want to highlight your skills, then a functional resume format is what you should consider. Instead of focusing on the work experience, a functional resume helps highlight your skills and how they'll benefit the job you're applying for.Unlike the chronological resume format, the functional one lists your skills as the main section, with work and experience and other details following afterward. One tip for writing an effective functional resume is that the details of the skills mentioned should also be included as sub-points. If you're a job hopper or someone who's planning to change careers, changeindustry or has an employment gap that you prefer not to show the employer, a functional resume will be the perfect choice for you.Pros Highlight your skills effectively, giving recruiters more information on how you can benefit their companies. Hide employment gaps. De-emphasize the job hopping scene, which can negatively impact recruiters' decisions. Be flexible, as you can make more subtle changes.Cons It might draw the employer’s attention to the covered-up work experience. It cannot show career growth. Recruiters might not be familiar with the format. 3. Combination resume Resume Format: Combination Resume FormatAs the name suggests, a combination resume is a format that combines elements of both chronological and functional resumes, including work experience and relevant skills. It is also commonly referred to as a hybrid resume. This type of resume format is very flexible as it allows you to adjust to the job vacancy's requirements. It doesn't matter if you have much or negligible working experience; this hybrid resume format can balance out the information to present yourself better.ProsAllows you to utilize your information to the needs of a position fully.Allows you to avoid including employment gaps. Can impress employers with detailed qualifications and skills.ConsCareer growth is not shown at first sight. The design might be overcrowded if the layout is not well-crafted.Traditional employers might not accept it. 11 Essential Resume Elements SectionsA resume serves as your first impression to potential employers before any face-to-face interaction, so understanding what to include is crucial. Here are the key elements that should be on your resume and how to write them:Resume HeaderResume header is the top section that contains your essential information. Typically, it includes your full name, phone number, professional email address. You can also consider adding your LinkedIn profile and other relevant professional social media handles. Having these details prominently displayed allows employers to contact you for further information quickly or to schedule an interview.Make sure that this information is accurate and up-to-date, as it is the primary means employers will communicate with you. 💡 Pro tip:Professional headshots are optional and depend on industry, job, and company requirements. So, make sure to check those details out before including your headshot in. Resume SummaryA resume summary or bio often follows a resume header. While the header contains your basic information, the summary or bio section provides a brief overview of your professional background, fundamental skills, and career objectives (sometimes people like to opt out of the resume summary but only keep the career objectives; again, this is entirely up to you and your goals). This summary should be concise and tailored to the job you are applying for, offering a snapshot of what makes you a strong candidate. 💡 Pro tip:Avoid making vague statements; if you don't have anything significant to share about your career objectives, it's better not to mention them. By placing the summary below the header, you create a logical flow that quickly informs employers about who you are and what you bring to the table. Here are some examples of good resume summary paragraph:"Experienced IT professional with over 8 years of expertise in systems administration, network management, and cybersecurity. Proficient in managing large-scale IT projects, optimizing system performance, and implementing robust security protocols. Strong problem-solving skills with a proven track record of enhancing operational efficiency and ensuring data integrity in fast-paced environments." "Creative marketing specialist with 5 years of experience in digital marketing, content creation, and brand management. Skilled in developing and executing marketing campaigns that drive engagement and increase sales. Proficient in SEO, social media strategy, and data analytics. Adept at leveraging market trends to deliver compelling messages and grow brand presence.""Dedicated early childhood teacher with 6 years of experience nurturing young minds in preschool and kindergarten settings. Passionate about fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment that supports the developmental needs of each child. Skilled in curriculum development, classroom management, and engaging parents in the educational process. Committed to cultivating curiosity and a love of learning in every student."Educational background If you are a fresher, your educational background will be fundamental as it helps recruiters to have a general idea of who you are, based on your majors and GPA/grades.When listing education in your resume, make sure to include the school name, the attendance year, degree, and GPA. 💡 Pro tip: Only include your GPA if it is above 3 or 3.5. Here are some examples of how you should format the educational background section:EDUCATIONALBACKGROUND Master of Science in Computer Science University of California, Berkeley, CA Graduated: May 2016Bachelor of Science in Information Technology Stanford University, Stanford, CA Graduated: May 2014 EDUCATIONALBACKGROUND Bachelor of Business Administration in Marketing New York University, New York, NY Graduated: May 2019Associate Degree in Communications Community College of Philadelphia, Philadelphia, PA Graduated: May 2017 EDUCATIONALBACKGROUND Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education University of Georgia, Athens, GA Graduated: May 2024 Relevant Coursework: Child Psychology and Development Classroom Management StrategiesEarly Literacy InstructionCurriculum Planning and AssessmentInclusive Education PracticesEducational Technology in Early Childhood Work Experience The working experience section is the main part of your resume (most of the time). When employers review the working experience section, they typically focus on four main things: your previous job title, the company you worked for, your primary responsibilities and the duration of your employment. But extra information about your achievement will gain you competitive edge. For instance, if you assisted your previous employers in acquiring 10,000 potential customers from their most recent conference, you may want to provide a brief overview of the event and outline the actions you took to achieve this result. Here is an example of how you can include work experience on your resume: WORK EXPERIENCE Digital Marketing Manager—XYZ Agency,New York, NY(September 2019 - Present) Develop and execute digital marketing strategies across multiple channels, including social media, email, and PPC advertising. Analyze campaign performance metrics and leverage data insights to optimize marketing efforts and drive ROI. We’ll then move onto some stellar samples, including a professional resume for entry-level applicants. Table of Contents: How to Write a Tax Accountant Resume Tips for Writing a Tax Accountant Resume Tax Accountant Resume Samples Conclusion How to Write a Tax Accountant Resume If you’ve ever written a resume before, you’ll know that there are four key sections to your resume: the Resume Profile, Work Experience, Skills, and Education section (though not necessarily in that order). However, when it comes to tax accountant resumes, we also have to throw in a Certifications section. Let’s see how all these sections contribute to crafting a professional tax accountant resume. Resume Header Important features of the resume profile like contact information (email and mobile) and portfolio links aside, the first thing you need to focus on is your tax accountant resume header. Essentially a title that you crown unto yourself, the resume header is a short phrase that sums up the most important thing about you. While experienced tax accountants may consider the most important thing to be their CPA qualification (which is understandably very important), entry-level candidates may instead choose for their resume header to be the position they’re applying to, i.e. Tax Accountant. Don’t worry, both methods are acceptable for your tax accountant resume. Here are a few simple examples that are great resume headers:Tax Accountant Resume - Resume Header Example #1Jane Doe - Tax AccountantTax Accountant Resume - Resume Header Example #2Mary Jan - CPA Senior Tax AccountantTax Accountant Resume - Resume Header Example #3Brad Doe - Senior Tax Accountant Resume Summary While it’s not a hard and fast rule, it’s generally advised that entry-level candidates focus on a resume objective, while professional candidates (those with a minimum of 2 years of experience) focus on a tax accountant resume summary. This stems from the idea that experienced candidates have more achievements that can be summarized, while fresh graduates or career changers only have their transferable skills. That said, regardless of if you’re more focused on writing a resume objective, you should still aim to be writing 2 to 4 sentences about yourself. For experienced tax accountants, this can be done through highlighting significant accomplishments, expertise, core competencies, and relevant skills.Tax Accountant Resume - Resume Sumnary Example #1Enthusiastic and detail-oriented graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Economics seeking an entry-level Tax Accountant position. Possesses a solid foundation in tax law, financial planning, and tax strategies.Tax Accountant Resume - Resume Summary Example #2Tax Accountant with experience in financial statement preparation, BAS completion, and tax return preparation. Proficient in using software such as QuickBooks and Xero to maintain accurate financial records and reduce errors. Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks effectively and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.Tax Accountant Resume - Resume Summary Example #3Results-driven Senior Tax Accountant with over two decades of experience in leading tax compliance and planning initiatives for global corporations. Proven track record of developing creative tax strategies to optimize clients’ financial outcomes. Expertise in analyzing financial data, managing tax audits, and providing strategic advice. 💡Pro Tip: It’s easier to write your tax accountant resume summary after you’ve completed the other sections of your resume. Resume Objective Resume objectives, also referred to as ‘career objectives’, are when you share your motivations, goals, and/or reasons for the application. They’re seen as an important part of a resume for entry-level tax accountants because they bring the focus to your strengths and transferable skills, rather than your work experience achievements like in a resume summary. Unlike fresh graduates, the resume objective is not hugely important for experienced applicants, however it’s still a good idea to include even just a sentence about why you’re applying or what you think you will gain from this position - and how that will benefit you in the long run.Tax Accountant Resume - Resume Summary Example #1Excited to support clients in their financial outcomes.Tax Accountant Resume - Resume Summary Example #2Eager to apply academic knowledge and transferable skills to support clients in optimizing financial outcomes at ABC company.Tax Accountant Resume - Resume Summary Example #3Committed to delivering exceptional results in a fast-paced global company. 💡Pro Tip: Entry-level applicants should try to mention how they can bring value to the position. They may also wish to add their motivations for applying to the position, but this can always be addressed within the cover letter if you don’t have enough space. Work Experience Now that we’ve gotten through the meet-and-greet part of the tax accountant resume, it’s time to get down to the nitty-gritty. That is, the work experience section. Arguably the most important part of your resume, the work experience section is your chance to show recruiters how your own skills and tax accountant achievements make you the matching candidate to the job description. You can ensure this by: Taking Keywords from the Tax Accountant Job Description: In addition to accurately conveying what you did in a role, you also need to consider how to make your work experiences relate or align to the job that you’re applying to. While you could go down the implication route, it’s actually better for you to use the same keywords as the tax accountant job description in your resume. This is for one of two reasons. The first is that it helps the Applicant Tracking System (more on this later) register you as a valid candidate. The second is that using keywords from the job description makes you more attractive to hiring managers as you have, or your tax accountant resume says you have, exactly what they’re looking for. Writing in an Active Voice: Meek, unassertive, resigned,...these are all synonyms of passive, the opposite of what you should convey in your tax accountant resume. Ensure this by writing in an active voice that conveys confidence and demonstrates your accomplishments within a role. Even better, use one of the thirty active verbs in the table below, tailored precisely for tax accountant job descriptions. PreparedAnalyzedReviewedAuditedExaminedIdentified MonitoredRepresentedAdvisedStrategizedCoordinatedDirected AssistedDevelopedFiledCollaboratedEvaluatedLed ResearchedMaintainedCalculatedCommunicatedNegotiatedSpearheaded PerformedReducedManagedImplementedVerifiedSupervised Quantifying Your Tax Accountant Achievements: Though it can be hard to know the exact figure of impact, you want to quantify your achievements in your resume to the best of your knowledge, taking care to ensure that they are practical, compelling, and convincing. This is a position that prides itself on numbers and accuracy, after all. Below are a few ways to note tax accountant achievements in your resume. Remember that for each work experience entered, you need to add the job title, company name, location (or country that you worked remotely in), and employment period.Tax Accountant Resume - Work Experience Example #3Global Tax Specialist | PwC LLP, London, UK 2014 - 2022Managed a portfolio of 10 clients, engaging in oral and written communication on a daily basis, fostering strong client relationships and delivering exceptional customer service.Utilized accounting software (QuickBooks) to input financial data, ensuring accuracy in tax compliance reports.Prepared financial statements with attention to detail, leading to a 15% reduction in errors and discrepancies. 💡Pro Tip: Remember not to disclose any confidential information about previous employers. Confidentiality plays a vital role in accounting, so be cautious when writing your tax accountant resume to not land in hot water and lose your credibility. Skills Tax accountants need to be comfortable with solving complex calculations, delivering exceptional customer service, maintaining keen attention to detail, abiding by tax laws, and proficiency using accounting software. In short, tax accountant must have the following skills: Knowledge of Tax LawFinancial StatementsAccounting SoftwareAttention to DetailCommunication That said, there are a great many other skills that you’re likely to see mentioned on tax accountant job descriptions, such as the following 40 hard (technical) and soft tax accountant resume skills.Hard SkillsFinancial StatementsPayroll ProcessingPayroll TaxesKnowledge of Tax LawTax ReturnsBookkeepingCost AccountingCapitalization ItemsAccount AnalysisAccounting Software (e.g. Xero, QuickBooks, Wave, etc.)Profit and LossAccount ReconciliationRevenue ProjectionsTax Preparation and PlanningCompliance KnowledgeAuditingIRS RepresentationBudgetingFinancial ReportingsForecastingSoft Skills Communication Collaboration Adaptability Attention to detail Problem-solving Analytical Time Management Critical Thinking Leadership Teamwork Management Organization Interpersonal Accuracy Planning Decision Making Customer Service Resilience Flexibility Prioritization 💡Pro Tip: Speak multiple languages? Don’t forget to mention any languages you’re proficient in in your skills section; they can make a huge difference for international accounting positions. Education Unlike other professions, tax accountants are required to have a bachelor’s degree with a major in either: AccountingFinanceEconomicsBusiness Administration. Yes, a high school diploma won’t cut it, nor should you even mention your high school diploma on a tax accountant resume. Instead, you should mention the university you attended, the degree level (BA, BSc, etc.), program(s) of study, and duration of your study (from start to end). If you’re still studying, you should note down the expected graduation date. Recent graduates may additionally wish to include more information about their studies, such as coursework, projects, awards, or extracurricular activities, that showcase transferable tax accountant resume skills. Professionals with more years of experience may also choose to include resources they used for upskilling, such as completing certifications or courses like: Chartered Global Management Accountant (AICPA)Enrolled Agent (IRS)Financial Reporting Specialization (Coursera) 💡Pro Tips: Only mention your GPA if it’s above a 3.5 or equivalent. Here’s how you list your education in a tax accountant resume:Tax Accountant Resume - Education Section Example #1MSc in FinanceUniversity of Southern California2023 - 2024B.A. in Accounting with EconomicsUniversity of Manchester2020 - 2023Tax Accountant Resume - Education Section Example #2BBA (Bachelor of Business Administration)IE University2015 - 2019 Certifications Though not an essential part of becoming a tax accountant, many jobs do require certain certifications (normally CPA). This can easily be added to your tax accountant resume by adding a ‘Certifications’ section. While you don’t have to list all the certifications you have on your resume, this isn’t a CV, you should try to mention the most important to the application. Here are a few relevant certifications to consider applying for that will bolster your tax accountant resume enormously: Certified Public Accountant (CPA)Chartered Tax Advisor (CTA)Certified Financial Planner (CFP)Chartered Tax Advisor (CTA)Enrolled Agent (EA) Not completed a certificate yet but in the process of gaining one? Don’t worry, you can still list it on your tax accountant resume by including your expected completion date. 💡Pro Tips: List your certifications from most relevant to least. This is an example of certifications list on a tax accountant resume:Tax Accountant Resume - Certifications Section Example #2Certified Public Accountant (CPA)Certified Public Accountant Association (CPAA)Certified Tax Accountant (CITA-UK)Certified Institute of Taxation Accountants Tips for Writing a Tax Accountant ResumeEnsure you use an ATS-friendly resume template ATS stands for Applicant Tracking System, a software used to collect and scan job applications. While used en masse at large companies - meaning that the likelihood of your tax accountant resume being run through one is exceptionally high - it’s not an all-knowing system because it struggles to recognize graphs, tables, columns, images, and special characters. This means that it’s incredibly important for your resume template to be ATS-friendly. With Cake's ATS-compliant resumes you can easily avoid running into trouble. All you have to do is set aside 5 minutes of your time to choose an already ATS-compliant template, customize the text and layout, and save the file as a PDF. That’s it! Customize your resume to the job description Customization is key when it comes to getting the hiring manager’s attention and into their good books, hence why a generic tax accountant resume just won’t cut it. If you want to avoid your resume seeming irrelevant, be sure to ask yourself the following questions before hitting that ‘submit’ button: Have you conveyed the key skills mentioned in the job description on your resume? Are you using the same keywords and terms used in the tax accountant job description on your resume? If you can answer ‘Yes’ and ‘Yes’ then you’ll know that you’ve properly customized your tax accountant resume to the position. Use the right resume format for your tax accountant resume Even if you have everything in place for your tax accountant resume, it could still all fall flat if you choose the wrong resume format as this is key to showing your organization and attention to detail. But which should you choose? First, you need to consider which fits best with your experience. The most commonly used format is the reverse chronological format, which is recommended for those with a consistent work history and career progression. However, only experienced professionals are recommended to use this type of format. Entry-level candidates are instead strongly recommended to use a skills-based format for their tax accountant resume, as this focuses on transferable capabilities rather than work experience. Include additional sections You may find that the traditional components of a resume - resume profile, work experience, skills, education, and certifications - are not enough to cover everything that you can bring to the position. If that’s the case, you may want to consider creating an additional section on your tax accountant resume. This could be to include any: Projects: If you partook in a project that showcases relevant skills and achievements, especially for entry-level applicants, be sure to add this to your tax accountant resume.Awards: Whether you were awarded university-level or industry-level recognition, be sure to include this to your resume if you think it shows transferable skills and is relevant to the position.Membership: It is likely, though not compulsory, that more senior tax accountants will be part of an association, like the American Taxation AssocIation (ATA), for example. Should you belong to a relevant taxation body, be sure to mention this on your resume. Created by CakeIn this article, you will learn: Step 1: Create a professional layout for your controller resume.Step 2: Adopt the right controller resume format.Step 3: Provide essential contact information.Step 4: Write a powerful controller resume headline.Step 5: Boost your controller resume with a strong summary.Step 6: Feature collections skills that employers are seeking.Step 7: Showcase your work experience and accomplishments.Step 8: List educational qualifications and background.Step 9: Beef up your controller resume with extras.Step 10: Craft a powerful controller cover letter.Controller Resume Sample Controllers oversee the accounting operations of a company and commonly have the final say on every financial decision, such as budgeting, reporting, investing and risk management (for small companies). In larger companies, typical duties are more specialized, with certain financial decisions shifted to the chief financial officer (CFO). What a controller does:Plan, direct and supervise all accounting operational functionsPrepare internal and external financial statements, reporting to the Board of DirectorsProvide effective management with information necessary for the decision-making processEvaluate the current accounting operations and offer recommendations for improvement and/or new process implementation If you’re pursuing a career in this field, make sure you have solid communication, technology, analytical, and management skills. It’s a must to obtain a relevant educational background and work experience. Most importantly, present all these key points on your controller resume to impress the potential employer and land the interview. Let us show you how with a 10-step guide and a professional corporate controller resume sample!Step 1: Create a professional layout for your controller resume.Let's check out the basic layout rules when formatting a controller resume. 1. Your resume should not be more than 2 pages. A resume should be one page most of the time, except for those with long-standing experience in the field. For example, a senior controller resume can be 2 pages as the extra page is necessary to fully convey the qualifications and work history. 2. Standard fonts are preferred throughout a resume for a controller job. The two most important factors are readability and professionalism. Stick to standard fonts for formal documents, such as Arial, Calibri, Times New Roman, Georgia, Roboto, or Helvetica. The ideal font size is 10-11pt for normal text and bigger for your name and section headings. 3. Choose an appropriate line spacing and margin size. Go for 1-1.5” on all sides for resume margins and 1.0-1.15 for line spacing on your controller resume. You can adjust accordingly to balance white space and text. 4. Hiring managers expect to read a PDF file. Most job search experts recommend PDFs instead of Word. The formatting won’t get messed up when employers open your file on different devices. Also, if you use a controller resume template on online resume builders like Cake, you can easily save it as a PDF. Step 2: Adopt the right controller resume format. The most commonresume formatsare chronological, functional, and hybrid (combination). The selection of your controller resume format determines how effectively the content reaches the employer. 📝 Chronological resume format This is the most common resume format preferred by both recruiters and applicants. A chronological controller resume presents the employment history in a timely-reversed order: the latest job at the top, followed by earlier jobs. As it focuses on work history, it’s a great choice for job seekers with plenty of work experience. 📝 Functional resume format A functional resume is a “skill-based resume”, which puts a focus on the candidate’s skills and abilities instead of employment history and career progression. You won’t only list out your skills by bullet points, but also elaborate them further in a specific context. Fresh grads, entry-level candidates, and career changers prefer to pick this resume format as they can de-emphasize their lack of work experience. 📝 Combinational resume format As the name suggests, this is the hybrid version of the chronological and functional resume format. You can highlight all of the key points regarding work experience, skills, and qualifications to impress the hiring manager. Hence, it will be great for professionals with both career history and skills worth showcasing. ✨ Tip: No matter what type of resume format you pick, make sure to tailor it to the specific position. Step 3: Provide essential contact information. The list below shows what you should and should not include in the Personal Information section of your financial controller resume. You should include these:Full nameEmail address Phone number Address (optional)Personal website (optional)LinkedIn URL (optional)You should not include these:Date of birth Identifying information (weight, height, gender, ID number)Religion Marital status Expected/current salary Step 4: Write a powerful controller resume headline.A resume headline (also known as “resume title”) is a short statement that introduces yourself and summarizes your entire resume content. Based on that, hiring managers can tell who and where you are in the field at a glance and will be more excited to read on your controller resume. A well-written resume headline should include one of the following elements:Expertise or major professionLevel of work experience and/or achievements in the fieldOutstanding skills and core competencies Controller resume headline examples:Credit controller resume:Senior Credit Controller with success in developing strong customer relationships to maximize account performance.Cost controller resume:Dependable Cost Controller with 5 years of directing all production accounting activities in TSMC.Accounting controller resume:Accounting Controller responsible for the management of Commercial Loan and Lease operating accounting. Step 5: Boost your controller resume with a strong summary.A summary statement (also known as “professional summary”) summarizes key qualifications about you and the content of your entire resume. It’s important to get it right so it can impress employers and motivate them to dive into your controller resume. What to mention in a controller resume summary:Professional level, including years of experience and key responsibilitiesOutstanding achievements in the previous roles (especially for a senior controller resume)Key skills needed for the controller position Examples of a well-written controller resume summary:Assistant controller resume:Assistant Controller fully responsible for coordinating accounting data from multiple locations, supervising the daily workflow, and authorizing exception items. 5 years working in ZAP Asset with significant achievement in saving delinquent accounts by 35%. An active listener and collaborative team leader who oversaw a team of 10 tax accountants. ✨ Reminder: A resume summary and a resume objective are not the same. An objective statement centers on your career goals and what you can bring to the employer in the future. Step 6: Feature collections skills that employers are seeking.Everyone knows how to list out skills on their resumes - but not everyone can get it right and effectively. First, keep in mind to go over the controller job description and identify what skills are required and preferred. Next, combine those skills with what you actually possess and use bullet points to make the section easy to read.Examples of essential controller skills for a resume:Soft skillsProblem-solvingCollaborationAnalytical skillsAttention to detailCritical thinkingCommunication skillsAbility to work independentlyNegotiation skillsMulti-taskingAbility to deal with stressWork ethicsHard skillsAccounting principlesFinancial statementsPayroll processingAsset managementTax regulationsPayment plansOutbound callsPast due accountsCustomer serviceDelinquent accountsLanguages Step 7: Showcase your work experience and accomplishments. Here comes the most critical part of your controller resume - key responsibilities and achievements in former jobs. The standard format for the Work Experience section is shown as below:Job titleCompany name (include the location if you find it relevant)Employment datesBrief job descriptions: key duties, outstanding achievements, and awards Example of a business controller resume:Business ControllerBank of America, Chicago09/2015 - 11/2018Handled the quarterly audit of all business processes that were presented to management.Worked closely with branch managers to investigate and develop merger possibilities.Moved corporate investments to index funds, resulting in 35% higher returns.✨Tip: Add quantifiable work results if you have any! A sincere and well-written cover letter can spark the hiring manager’s interest and land you the interview. How to format a cover letter for controller jobs:Provide basic contact information, including full name, email, personal website (if any)Introduce who you are and what position you’re applying forExplain why you are interested in this role and this companyDemonstrate the qualifications and work experience that make you the right fitEnd with a polite closing and sincere express an appreciation for the employer’s time and consideration It’s no big deal if you probably find it struggling to write a controller resume.📚 Further reading:The Cover Letter to Land Your Dream Job With Cake’s resume builder tool, resume templates and resume examples, you could showcase your best qualifications to land your dream job. 20+ Investment Banking Resume Templates, Examples, and Writing Tips (Latest Updates)

The investment banking industry is one of the most complex and challenging jobs in the financial sector. As part of a universal or commercial banking division, investment bankers employed by banks are responsible for helping clients understand the current investment climate in order to raise capital. Before starting to write your investment banking resume, make sure to read Cake's complete guide on how to make it stand out. We also provided an example of an investment banker's resume and template.Table of Contents What Are the Responsibilities of an Investment Banker? Guidelines for Writing a Resume for Investment Bankers Tips for Writing Winning Investment Banking Resumes Investment Banking Resume Examples Templates Investment Banking Cover Letter Example What is the role of investment bankers? Understanding investment can be complex for the average person. Investment banking jobs primarily involve providing support for companies seeking to raise capital. This includes activities such as mergers and acquisitions, financial advisory services, underwriting, and managing the initial public offering (IPO) process. Read more about the role of investment bankers, their roles, salary and required skills. When writing an investment banking resume, understanding the job responsibilities is an absolute must. This advice is especially important for entry-level candidates, as the extent of your knowledge about the job you are applying for will actually be reflected in your resume. Guidelines for Writing a Resume for Investment Bankers Personal Information The first thing to fill out when creating an investment banking resume is personal information. There are limits to what you can and can't include. In recent months, there have been cases of recruiters being caught stealing candidate data and using it to defraud candidates. In the digital age, personal information is the new gold that must be carefully guarded.DO'sName: Provide your full name clearly. If you have two legal names, you can include both. Name is the primary identity that hiring managers need to identify applicants.Email address: Email is a tool for professional correspondence. Email saves all conversations in case they are needed someday.Phone number: Hiring managers usually use messaging apps when they need a quick response from a candidate.Your City: Include the city where you currently live. This information is used to help recruiters estimate the distance between your home and the office, or the possibility of relocating if necessary.LinkedIn account: Today, LinkedIn is a social media platform for showcasing your professional life. It also makes it easier for you to network. Recruiters can check your profile if they need additional references.Portfolio: You can include a link to your portfolio to make it easier to review your investment banking resume. For banking, this could be your work in a programming language or a list of certifications you've earned. There are a few caveats you need to keep in mind when creating your investment banking resume, which are: DON'TsList only your city of residence, not the entire page. This reduces the risk of a data leak.At the initial stage, companies never ask for insurance numbers or identity numbers. These are only requested when you are officially accepted as an employee.Whatever your beliefs are, they have nothing to do with the way you work. So it's best not to list them on your investment banking analyst resume. In some countries, it is illegal to ask for detailed personal information. Resume Summary An investment banking resume needs a summary, a concise statement that summarizes the entire content of your application. It should be only three to four sentences and need to summarize your background, work accomplishments, and other important information. The resume summary is the very first part that recruiters read. If the summary is not strong, the chances of your investment banking resume being read in its entirety are slim. You can start by listing your skills, then your measurable accomplishments and important information. After that, organize the information as densely as possible but still clearly. You can try stringing words together in a scrapbook or Microsoft Word. Read your sentences aloud. This method can increase your sensitivity to whether or not your summary is good enough. The next step is to ask someone else to read it for you. Then ask for feedback and suggestions for improvement. Here are some resume summary examples that can be on an investment banking resume:Detail-oriented and passionate fresh graduate in Economics with a 3.9 GPA from Gadjah Mada University. Has experience as an internal investment analyst at Macroindo, mainly assisting the senior team in analyzing financial risks and security of the company's assets. Pursuing a role as an Investment Banking Analyst at JP Morgan.A senior investment banker with more than 8 years of experience advising clients on best practices for mergers and acquisitions. Track record of project managing $50-$70 billion merger and acquisition transactions for international companies. Eager to apply my expertise as an investment banker at Kenney. A senior investment banker with 15 years of experience in global asset management, particularly in the design and structuring of new investment products. Successful track record with an average increase in client assets under management of 40-50%. Career Objectives New graduates sometimes find it difficult to distinguish between career goals and career objectives. They are both at the top of the resume if you are writing an investment banking analyst resume. However, the summary of investment banking resume is used for professionals who have at least two years of experience. Career objectives are used by fresh graduates or job seekers who are changing careers. Career objectives written in an investment banking resume contain your future goals. For example, you are applying for a job because you want to use your technical skills in banking. Fresh graduates with no work experience can include information about mastering skills critical to investment banking or non-technical skills that can help them communicate with clients.Career objective - Investment banking resume example #1A fresh graduate who is excited to join ABC Bank as a Junior Investment Banking Analyst where I can start my early career and hone my skills.Career objective - Investment banking resume example #2A data analyst looking to make a career change as an Intern Investment Banking Analyst by applying my skills as a strong researcher.Career objective - Investment banking resume example #3A highly motivated and hardworking fresh graduate seeking an Investment Banking Analyst position with key expertise in Mathematics and Economics. Work Experience This time we are going to focus on the most important part of an investment banking resume: work experience. Here are some tips on how to make your work experience section stand out: 1) Quantify your accomplishments The mistake many job seekers make is not being able to explain how they contributed to the company. Contribution is not just a list of responsibilities. Hiring managers understand the day-to-day tasks you perform more. Contributions that are referred to here are accomplishments that can be easily measured. Example: "Prepared financial analysis for more than 10 clients." This descriptive sentence doesn't explain what impact you had on the client. What if we changed it to: "Prepared financial analysis with 100% accuracy for more than 10 clients, successfully increasing their satisfaction rating to 99%. The second sentence is more powerful in explaining the impact of financial analysis jobs on clients. To build credibility and coverage, try to include numbers, percentages, and financial data as much as possible. 2) Use action verbs and bullet points Action verbs are words that show the process of the work you do. Action verbs are used in investment banking resumes to emphasize your role in the previous company. Some of the action verbs you can use are: Created Achieved Decreased Increased Performed Completed Presented Completed Adapted Collaborated Built Analyzed Duplicated Developed Improved Implemented Established Meanwhile, bullet points make your resume more organized and concise. The purpose of using bullet points is to make your investment banking resume easier to read.Work experience section - Investment banking resume#1Senior Investment Banking Associate atWells BankApr 2017 - Apr 2024Successfully developed and maintained financial models and investment strategies that increased efficiency by 45% for investment evaluations, projections, and valuations.Performed detailed financial statement analysis for over 250 clients to determine financial and operational scenarios.Established relationships with auditors, legal and other professionals to perform risk assessments.Monitored portfolio company performance on a regular basis, making information updates more effective.Work experience section - Investment banking resume#2Senior Investment Banking Analyst atWells BankJan 2013 - Dec 2016Performed scenario analysis and sensitivity testing that successfully reduced potential impact on investment decisions by up to 50%.Developed and maintained financial models used for investment analysis, discounted cash flow, etc.Evaluated risks associated with investment opportunities that influenced senior management decisions. Skills Skills can be divided into two categories: technical skills and non-technical skills. The list of skills in an investment banking resume is what differentiates you from other candidates. Technical skills are the specialization you have in certain tools. While non-technical skills are your interpersonal skills when communicating with others. Here are some of the most important skills you must have if you want to become an investment banker: Hardworking and Disciplined:Being an investment banker requires dedication and the ability to persevere. Investment banking has an intense work culture with long hours. This means that if you can't be disciplined and hardworking, you will be left behind and eliminated by your colleagues. Forging these two traits is not easy, so before you send your resume for an investment banker position, you need to understand the risks of working in banking.Intellect:An investment banker works like a machine because you have to calculate, analyze, research, and so on at the same time. According to Investopedia, the intellect of an investment banker is a core competency that must be possessed.Companies also need employees who maintain intellectual curiosity. This habit can accelerate one's understanding of the job and generate creative and smart ideas.Expert in Numbers:Financial reports, of course, contain numbers. Investment bankers who are numeracy experts automatically train their brains to think systematically and logically. When a problem arises, a trained investment banker can do accurate financial analysis and estimate what steps to take, what options are available, what risks are involved, and more.Meticulous:The end result of investment banking is to advise companies on the direction of their business. Inaccuracy in reading reports will have fatal consequences. An investment banker may miscalculate the price of a stock, resulting in a loss instead of a profit.Leadership and Client Relations Skills:It is naive to expect clients to have the same characteristics. Sometimes we meet clients who are easy to deal with, but there are also times when we have to deal with annoying clients. The ability to build a good relationship also means the ability to adapt to the characteristics of the client. It's time for you to showcase your leadership skills and client relationship-building experience as an investment banker. As well as the ability to communicate high-level financial strategies and concepts with executives.Open-minded:Investment banking is a broad job. Every day there is something new to learn. An open mind can lead to a deeper understanding of the profession, the opportunities it offers, and the paths to further development. Education History Education information is especially important for recent graduates submitting investment banking resumes. For those who already have work experience, you can also include this information, although the format will be different than for entry-level positions. List your education chronologically, starting with your most recent education. Include details such as the name and location of the university and the dates of attendance.Include your GPA if it's above 3. If it's below, it's best not to include it.For recent graduates, place this section under resume objectives. That way, recruiters can easily see your affiliations.Education section - Investment banking resumeBachelor of Science in Accounting Graduate in February 2024GPA: 3.8/4.0; SAT: 1500Relevant coursework:Investment Banking and Corporate Finance Bootcamp - Singapore Management University, 2023Undergraduate Wall Street Bootcamp, 2023Investment Management - University of Geneva (via Coursera), 2022Investment Banking: Financial Analysis and Valuation (via Coursera), 2022Education section - Investment banking resumeMaster of Science in Economics (Summa Cum Laude)National University of SingaporeJan 2006 - Nov 2008Bachelor of Science in Economics (Summa Cum Laude)University of IndonesiaApr 2000 - Apr 2004 Other Information Languages skills The use of English in today's working world is commonplace. The opening up of work-from-home and work-from-anywhere opportunities allows you to work in overseas companies without leaving your hometown. In investment banking, the clients you meet can be diverse. Mastering a foreign language other than English can attract more clients from around the world. This is a very beneficial move from a business perspective. Mandarin, Japanese, German, French, and Spanish are being studied. It seems to have something to do with the economic level of the country. Aside from being a banker, you can also find opportunities to become a translator for clients.Language section - Investment banking resumeLanguage skillsIndonesia (Native)English (IELTS: 6.5)Germany (C2)Mandarin (HSK 4) Certification For an investment banker, certification is a sign that his or her technical expertise is recognized by a trusted institution. It also enhances the banker's credibility and reputation. Some countries even prohibit an investment banker from practicing without certain certifications or licenses. In the United States, SIE and FINRA licenses are mandatory for bankers. CFA and FRM are professional certifications that signify that the banker has technical expertise and can apply it appropriately. These certifications and licenses also open up more opportunities for a banker. This means that the possibility of holding the highest position, that of managing director, is increasingly open. Research is a critical asset when building an investment banking resume. Job postings do not provide all the information about a company. In fact, a company's work culture may not be the right fit for you. There are several benefits to doing your research: You will know what kind of company you are applying to. This includes an overview of the work environment, the typical base salary offered, the employment contract, the career path, and the benefits offered. The research process will help you feel more confident. Hiring managers typically test how well you've researched their company. Your answers will show how enthusiastic you are about joining their team.Job descriptions show only a portion of the work you will be doing. Once you've explored the company's social media, you can at least get an idea of the additional work your employer will assign to you.Research will help you identify which aspects of your resume you need to strengthen. For example, you can include jargon or even specific terms that are commonly used in the company.Use your research to determine which skills need to be emphasized to meet the requirements. You can use the company's official social media or ask for testimonials from former employees through LinkedIn. For comparison purposes, you can also look at competing companies' social media. Do you know the difference between a resume and a CV? CVs and resumes are often interchangeable in countries such as the United Kingdom, New Zealand, some European countries, Australia, and some Asian countries, such as Indonesia and Malaysia. However, they serve very different purposes. A CV is a summary of all your professional activities, including your educational history, work experience, internship experience, organizational experience, and a list of skills. CVs can be up to 10 pages long (more if needed) and are intended for academic purposes, such as applying to be a researcher or lecturer, getting a scholarship, or seeking research funding. In the United States, where the two are strictly separated, when recruiters ask for a CV, they expect a comprehensive overview. But if you're applying to a company in Southeast Asia, for example, you might want to confirm the format first before sending it. A resume, on the other hand, is a condensed version. The length of a resume is no more than 3 pages. It includes all of your work experience relevant to the position you are applying for. If you are sending an Investment Banking Analyst resume, it would be more sustainable if it contains activities that you have done related to the world of banking and investment. For example, a candidate with more than 10 years of experience may omit some sections of the investment banking resume. Examples of sections that are not relevant for senior-level candidates with long tenure are education history and skills list. What type of resume will you use? Did you know that there are three types of resume formats? By choosing the correct investment banker resume format, you can increase your chances of getting noticed by hiring managers. Often, the most appropriate resume type is chronological. Here's the full explanation of each type: Chronological Resume: This resume lists all information chronologically, with the most recent experience at the top. Recruiters can easily see whether the candidate's recent activities are relevant to the company's needs. In addition to investment banking resumes, the chronological format works well for job seekers with a linear work history, such as from banking analyst to banking associate to vice president.Functional resume: Are you a recent graduate struggling to put together an investment banking resume? If so, you should know that the functional resume format is best suited for recent graduates. In a functional resume, instead of highlighting work experience, candidates can replace it with promoting their hard and soft skills.Combination Resume: This is the least appropriate format for an investment banking resume. Combination resumes are often used by freelancers and job hoppers who have a variety of work experience. Unfortunately, an investment banking resume is a rather strict job when it comes to background requirements for candidates. As a result, it is difficult for freelancers to break into this industry unless they are enrolled in a specialized investment banking program. How do you place keywords in your investment banking resume? Many companies use applicant tracking systems (ATS) to conduct the initial screening of candidates. The way it works is that the hiring manager enters keywords according to the qualifications needed by the company. These keywords are placed in the cover letter, resume summary, resume objective, work experience, and even letters of recommendation, if any. For example, the company needs an analyst whose primary skill is creating financial models. The ATS engine will scan which resumes contain the word financial model. The easiest way to find the right keywords is to understand the job description and requirements in the job posting. Companies usually emphasize the type of candidate they are looking for. For clarity, check out the sample job description below:Investment Banking Intern Job Description Assist in conducting TMT/Consumer industry and company research and analysis. Assist in the preparation of materials for internal and external meetings (e.g. pitch books, presentation materials, teasers, etc.) Assist in the development of financial models, investment strategies, valuations (e.g., DCF, sensitivity analysis, comparable), and due diligence. Act as a liaison between the team and other parts of the company Keywords you can find are pitch books, presentation, financial models, valuation, analysis, investment banking intern, TMT, and consumer products. Once the keywords are in place, you still have a job to do. You see, each company has different candidate requirements, even if the job is the same. Company A and Company B are both looking for banking analysts, but their requirements may be different. Using keywords in an ATS requires you to tailor each investment banking resume you create to the job description of each job. This will increase your chances of getting through to the interview stage.Investment Banking Resume Templates and ExamplesInvestment banking resume template (entry-level) AXEL WANGMobile: (+62)00-1174-89977Email: [email protected]Address: Jakarta, IndonesiaLinkedin: linkedin.com/in/axelwang RESUME SUMMARY Detail-oriented and passionate fresh graduate in Economics with a 3.9 GPA from Gadjah Mada University. A resume consisting of 2 to 3 pages cannot contain all the information about you; for example, you cannot explain the gap in your employment period in your resume. The only way to do this is to include it in a cover letter, or you'll have to wait until the interview to let the hiring managers know about these details. We understand if you are reluctant to write a cover letter assuming that no hiring manager will read it. Unfortunately, hiring managers spend an average of only a few seconds reading a candidate's cover letter. However, Forbes found that 72% of hiring managers expect candidates to write cover letters. In fact, cover letters cause 77% of hiring managers to read your investment banking resume in detail. So why spend time guessing that your cover letter won't be read? Cause the truth is, you don't know. Who knows, your cover letter could be the lucky star that lands you that investment banking job! A good cover letter is a well-written cover letter. Cake knows that writing from scratch is hard work, so we're here to help you understand the important parts of a cover letter. 1) Who are you? In any document you send to apply for a job, you should always include information about yourself. This information, written in the upper left corner, includes: Your full name. The city where you liveYour phone numberYour email addressLinkedIn AccountPortfolio account To make it easy for recruiters to find you, don't forget to include a link for each of these. 2) When did you write this letter? The purpose of including a date in a cover letter is to add a personal touch. The date also helps recruiters determine when you sent the application. 3) To whom are you sending this letter? In addition to the date, including the hiring manager's name can maximize your cover letter's potential for personalization. You can include the hiring manager's name, position, and office location (just as you would if you were writing a postcard). 4) Greet the recipient appropriately This time, greet your hiring managers to show your appreciation. It would be even better if you knew his or her name. You can use the format [Dear Ms./Mr. Insert Name]. But if you don't have that information, just use "Dear Hiring Manager”. 5) What is your opening sentence? As mentioned in the previous paragraph, the hiring manager only has a few seconds to read. That means you only have 3-4 sentences to explain your academic achievements, your contributions to your previous company, and your skills. To make it more interesting, always quantify your information! 6) What are your responsibilities? Do you still need to explain your job description and any awards you received from your previous job? The next paragraph can be your place to write a detailed explanation! 7) Why are you applying? Yes, employers really want to know what made you decide to apply. This part will be easy if you've done some research about the place you're applying to. Admiration for the company's work system, belief in the company's supportive work environment, or personal memories make great writing material. 8) Do you have any additional information? You can skip this section if you don't have anything important to say. But if you have a letter of recommendation, for example, and want to highlight it, this is your chance to make that clear. 9) Close the letter nicely. We've come to an end. It's time to end the letter with enthusiasm. Say that you appreciate their consideration of your cover letter and investment banker resume. Also, mention that you are available to discuss your skills and experience. Now that you've known how to write an impressive cover letter let's look at this investment banking cover letter example: Steven Park Jakarta, Indonesia (+62)00-0001-6688 [email protected] LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/stevenpark Portfolio: bit.ly/stevenp Jul 8, 2024 To: Daniel Amstrong Human Resources Manager Wells Bank 321, BSD City Jakarta, IndonesiaDear Mr. Amstrong As an Investment Banking Associate for 4 years, I have a proven track record of building financial models that influence the accuracy of strategic and analytical decisions by up to 100%.The financial models I built contributed to MA strategy analysis, capital raising, financing analysis, and valuation analysis related to major clients. Introduce Yourself with a Resume Headline A resume headline, often referred to as a resume title, is a basic summary of you and your career. Typically placed at the very top of your resume, the resume headline gives hiring managers an introduction to you as a candidate. The key here is to keep it short and to the point. Aim to have the resume title in one line or a maximum of two lines and highlight the required skills or experience for the job to which you are applying. An engaging resume title can be the deciding factor for recruiters whether to read further. It is recommended to tailor your career goals here to match the opening job. And above all, make it clear and concise—one to two sentences should do the trick. Certifications show your ambition and tenacity and will make you a more competitive candidate. Many finance positions require certifications, so be sure to check before applying. If you have multiple certifications then create a separate section and list them together. Otherwise, if you only have one or two, then you can include them with your education. Here are several certifications that may be worth listing on your finance resume: Certified Public Accountant (CPA)Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA)Certified Management Accountant (CMA)Certified Financial Planner (CFP)Financial Risk Manager (FRM)Certified Treasury Professional (CTP)Certified Investment Management Analyst (CIMA)Certified Fund Specialist (CFS)Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA)Certified Valuation Analyst (CVA)FINRA Series 7FINRA Series 63FINRA Series 65FINRA Series 668 Tips for Crafting a Good Finance Resume 1) Start with the Right Format Be aware of the three different resume formats and choose the one that suits your needs: Chronological Resumes: The chronological resume is the most commonly used resume type where you list your work experience in reverse chronological order, from the most recent to the least recent. If your past several work experiences align with the position for which you are applying, then go with this format. Functional Resume: A functional resume highlights your skills rather than your chronological experience in your resume. This resume format is highly suitable for recent graduates with limited work experience or people changing careers. It's important in a functional resume to provide examples of how you have applied these skills in your previous experiences.Combination Resume: A combination resume also focuses on skills but uses work experience as a supplement to support skills. This is great for people who are switching careers, and much of their work experience might not be relevant.📚 Further reading: What Is a Resume: Resume Formats, Resume Elements, Resume Writing Tips 2) Use keywords from the job description It’s important to use keywords from the job description, as many large companies use an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) for hiring. An ATS is a software used by employers to scan, rate, and organize resumes submitted for their positions. It scans applications looking for keywords, specific skills, and experience that are important to the job. Those keywords are usually mentioned in the job listing, sometimes more than once, so applicants should take note of which ones to include on their resumes for a high-rated ATS.
Consider the following steps when incorporating keywords: Read the job description Example: “Seeking a Junior Analyst to support investment decision-making through data analysis and market research; proficiency in Python required, with strong analytical and communication skills.”Analyze the keywords mentioned. Keywords: investment decision-making, data analysis, market research, Python, analytical and communication skills.Craft your sentences using the keywords. After analyzing, here's how you should craft your resume:Finance Resume - Work experience exampleConducted comprehensive data analysis using Python to provide insights for portfolio management and strategy developmentPerformed in-depth market research and financial modelling to assess investment opportunities, utilizing strong analytical and communication skills to present findings to senior analystsAssisted in preparing detailed reports and presentations to contribute to investment decision-making made by the entire analyst team By incorporating these specific keywords into your resume, you increase the likelihood of your application successfully navigating through ATS filters. 3) Create a profile by summarizing your finance qualifications and experience Present a concise yet compelling overview of your professional background, skills, and achievements. This text can be used as a summary at the top of a resume, as a header on LinkedIn, or as an introduction for a company’s hiring website. Highlight key qualifications such as relevant degrees, certifications, and technical skills, along with your experience in financial analysis, budgeting, or investment management. Emphasize any accomplishments or projects that demonstrate your unique abilities. 4) Highlight your achievements with quantifiable results and impact A good finance professional should be good with numbers. So finding places in your resume to show off these abilities will set you apart from the field. Using numbers in a finance resume is crucial for demonstrating the tangible impact of your work and quantifying your contributions. For instance, instead of simply stating that you handled financial forecasting, you could note that you improved forecasting accuracy by 15%. Here’s a list of places where you can potentially quantify results and show off your financial chops to impress your future employers: Revenue GrowthCost ReductionsFinancial Forecasting AccuracyProfit MarginsInvestment ReturnsBudget ManagementCash Flow OptimizationComplianceDebt ManagementProject Success Rate 5) Use action verbs to begin each bullet point Using action words in a finance resume is essential for making your accomplishments stand out. Words like "analyzed," "optimized," and "generated" emphasize the proactive role you played. Action verbs help demonstrate your ability to drive results, whether through improving profitability, reducing costs, or enhancing processes. Try out some of these action words: managed, analyzed, created, developed, improved, increased, reduced, streamlined and optimized. 6) Highlight your promotions, leadership, and financial analysis skills It’s important to demonstrate your growth, influence, and expertise within the field. Promotions show that your contributions have been recognized and your career is advancing. Leadership experience emphasizes your ability to manage teams and guide financial strategy. Additionally, strong financial analysis skills showcase your abilities in making data-driven decisions for the company's overall financial success. These elements combined make your resume more compelling to potential employers — so consider including to your work experience or to your resume summary. 7) Keep your resume concise and easy to read Hiring Managers often review tons of applications, and a clear, well-organized resume allows them to quickly identify your key qualifications. A to-the-point resume emphasizes your most impactful skills without overwhelming the reader, making it more likely that your accomplishments will stand out and resonate with potential employers. 8) Avoid clichés and overused phrases Overused phrases on a finance resume can shut the door to an interview. These generic terms can make your resume blend in with others, failing to showcase your unique skills and accomplishments. Instead of phrases like "results-driven" or "detail-oriented," use specific examples and quantifiable achievements, such as "improved forecasting accuracy by 15%" or "managed a $5 million portfolio.” Or instead of using the term “team player,” try “led a cross-functional team to integrate a new ERP system.” Eliminating these phrases can really differentiate your resume from others and show off your uniqueness.📚 Further reading: 39 Best Resume Tips to Catch Recruiter's Attention and Land an Interview | 2024 Financial Resume ExamplesEntry-Level Finance Resume Example #1 Financial Analyst Resume Example #2 CFO Resume Example #3 Investment Banking Analyst Resume Example #4 Risk Management Resume Example #5 ConclusionThe perfect finance resume is easy to put together using the above tips.
