Then, we would create both 2D and 3D layout drafts based on their briefing. Then, based on the equipment, we will design the most optimal layout and consult with the client throughout. After discussing and making changes based on our clients need's, we will finalise the plan and begin construction." 10) “Describe a time when you had to work on a team to solve a problem. How did you handle the collaboration?” Besides reviewing your knowledge, make sure you also prepare for behavioural questions as well. If you don't have relevant experience as a chemical engineer, that's okay - use any other job experience or experiences in doing group work instead: "In my previous internship, I was a part of a graduate group that worked together on all projects for an energy company. We often split up our tasks based on who had the most experience in that area, as our group was a mix of chemical and mechanical engineers. When we were given a brief, we would go through it together, decide on the main priorities and delegate among teammates. We had a daily morning meeting where we could decide on our goals and also solve issues we had. What factors would you consider?” Use this question as a way to share your theoretical knowledge about scaling: "Important factors to consider include knowing the goal or target of scaling up the chemical engineering process, understanding the main mechanisms involved, and practical things such as safety considerations, chemical availability, and fluid flow mechanics.Since scaling up means a larger system, we would also need to consider energy consumption, environmental regulations and cost." 15) “A reactor has suddenly stopped working. We would run tests to see if there are any specific functions that are not optimal or correct, and after finding the issue, we can begin to repair it." 16) “How would you handle a situation where a process efficiency is lower than expected?” For technical questions like this, you can demonstrate both your knowledge and problem-solving abilities for common issues in the chemical engineering industry: "To understand why process efficiency is lower than expected, we must utilise facts that chemical engineers must know, including mass and heat energy, heat transfer, and mass transfer limitations, and whether we are working with irreversible processes or reversible processes, whether it is a closed system, for example. These concepts can help us understand and guide our troubleshooting. We can use a range of software to help us analyse the process and its data. After we identify the issue, we can then begin implementing ways to optimise it.
