Java Developer Resume: Example and Template

Created by Cake You'll learn:How to write a Java developer resume What to put on a resume for a Java developer Tips for writing the best Java developer resume How to write a cover letter for a Java developer Java developer resume sample Java developers are tasked with designing, building, and developing sophisticated applications, websites, and software using the Java programming language. Unlike a software engineer or a software developer, a Java developer’s role and responsibility are keeping track of the overall quality in the life cycle of a product. In this fast-changing world, Java developers have become one of the most highly demanded professionals on the market. Many employers seek to find talented developers who are adept at coding. Aside from your coding competence, a good Java developer resume may be your golden ticket to the position you want. This article will highlight some of the key elements in writing a resume for Java developers. How to write a Java developer resume Whether you are writing a senior Java developer resume, or an entry-level Java developer resume with little to no experience, having an effective resume will significantly boost your competitiveness and credibility among your competitors. Without further ado, here are 5 useful steps to follow to create a powerful Java developer resume.Step 1: Understand the difference between a Java developer CV and a resume In short, a resume underscores a short and concise overview of your experience, skills, and accomplishments. A CV, short for Curriculum Vitae, is an in-depth overview of your affiliations, research, and achievement within a specific field and is usually used for academic and scientific purposes. Step 2: Choose the right resume format for Java developers With that in mind, let’s have a look at the most suitable resume format for a Java developer. There is a wide range of different formats at your disposal. Currently, the three most popular resume formats for Java programmer: The chronological resume format: This format adopts the reverse chronological order that shows your work history starting from your latest jobs on the top followed by your previous ones. The functional resume format: This format highlights your competence instead of a list of jobs that you’ve had previously. The combination resume format: This resume format as its name suggests showcases both your work experience in reverse chronological order and your professional skills.Depending on your needs, each resume format serves different purposes. For choosing a good resume format for Java developers, it is recommended to use the chronological format for two reasons: 1. It showcases the most compelling experience.2. It makes your career path more goal-oriented. Step 3: Look up Java developer resume templates online as references There isn’t “the perfect resume format and template” since each occupation has its optimal ones. Check out other Java developer resume templates and samples online for references before drafting. Step 4: Tailor your resume for different Java developer jobs The key to tailoring a Java developer resume is to highlight the most relevant experience, making you the best choice for your employer. Different positions have different standards for writing a resume, so it is crucial to tailor your own Java software engineer resume following the job description. Step 5: Craft a Java developer cover letter An ideal cover letter is usually a one-page long letter that restates your motivation and prospects for the position. It is an important supplement that can leverage both you and your Java developer resume. Step 6: Have your Java developer resume proofreadWith everything done, have your Java developer resume proofread by proofreaders. If the position you are applying for is a Java software engineer, for instance, you might want to have your resume proofread by a software engineer or a software developer to see if it demonstrates both you and your skills. 17+ IT Project Managers Resume Templates & Examples: Writing Guideline

To find a good IT/Technical Project Manager job, it is imperative that you have a solid resume that shows off your skills and experience. With an estimated 130,000+ people working across the IT and tech sectors, this means there are a lot of opportunities—yet a lot of competition as well. An IT or Technical Project Manager is responsible for overseeing and coordinating technology-related projects from initiation to completion. They create detailed project plans, schedule tasks, allocate resources, and manage budgets. Throughout the project lifecycle, they monitor progress, facilitate communication between technical teams, troubleshoot issues, and ensure that the project stays on track with timelines and objectives. IT Project Manager vs Technical Project Manager The terms IT project manager and technical project manager are often used interchangeably, but they actually involve different skills and responsibilities. It's important to be able to distinguish between them. IT project managers typically oversee IT-related projects such as software implementations, system upgrades, or network installations. On the other hand, technical project managers handle projects that require more hands-on involvement with technology, such as software development, system and architecture, or other engineering projects. IT project managers are skilled in project management (using agile/scrum methodology) and possess IT system knowledge, as well as strong communication and leadership skills. Technical project managers, on the other hand, need to have technical expertise in areas such as software development, cloud computing, and system architecture. Despite the distinctions, these roles often involve leading projects that require strategic oversight of IT systems and detailed technical knowledge, which is why the job titles are frequently used interchangeably. Having a professional IT/technical project manager resume will increase your chances of standing out from other applicants. Therefore, it’s important to highlight your capabilities and achievements in the most competitive way on your resume. Created by CakeIf you've never written a resume before and this is your first time, you might have questions like what tense should your resume be written in? Or when creating a resume, why do we need to pay attention to the verb tense?Firstly, using proper tenses will help the recruiter to understand what you currently do and what you have done before. In addition, the information written in your resume using past or present tense should also correspond to the timeline of the events you put in to avoid confusion. Having flawless grammar and consistency in your resume shows that you are organized and pay great attention to detail. Perhaps there are some sentences in your resume written in the present tense, but should actually use the past tense, who knows? Table of Contents:What Tense Should Be Used in a Resume Writing? When to Use Past Tense in a ResumeWhen to Use Present Tense in a ResumeWhen to Mix Past and Present Tense in a ResumeWhat Tense Should Be Used in a Resume Writing? There are three fundamental tenses in English: present tense, past tense, and future tense. When writing your resume, the present tense is used to describe your current role or ongoing projects. Meanwhile, entries like achievements, prior job duties, and completed projects in your resume are written using the past tense. The only section in a resume where you possibly use future tense is to state your career objective and what you hope to achieve in a specific company or role. Since the majority of your resume space is to convey your past experience, the basic resume writing and tenses rule is using the past tense. Generally, resumes should only be written in past tense because it is essentially a record of what we did professionally and where we studied. However, when talking about your current position in a resume, describing it with present tense is the correct way to go. To achieve perfect grammar and a good sense of logic in your resume, the key is to be accurate and consistent in the use of tenses. Accurate means no mistyping and choosing the correct tense for each section. On the other hand, being consistent means maintaining the same tense – whether it's past or present tense – for all the sentences within a resume section. On certain occasions that will be discussed further in this article, mixing up tenses to use in a resume for different verbs is acceptable. Keep reading to see which past tense action verbs for your resume you should use to amaze the hiring manager, how to use present tense on a resume (with examples), and how to incorporate both tenses in a resume. When to Use Past Tense in a ResumeYou can expect that 90% of your resume content is going to be written in past tense because the bulk of it is talking about your previous work and experiences. Past experiences Past experiences are basically a track record of what you have done throughout your life up to this point. Although employment history is probably the most associated when we talk about past experiences, it is not only limited to work history. It could also include internships, volunteering experiences, participation in certain organizations, and others. Here’s a sample of work experience resume section in past tense: WORK EXPERIENCELead Photographer | LENZ2016 - 2021Curated photoshoot proposal for clients based on the creative brief and campaign objectives.Collaborated cross-functionally with executive, finance, and communication departments.Directed models and staff during photoshoot operations and ensured.Trained 5 junior photographers and conducted bi-monthly workshops.Performed strict quality checks to confirm high-quality deliverables. Here’s a sample of a volunteer experience resume section in past tense: WORK EXPERIENCEPart-time Biology Tutor | Newdale Community Center2011-2014Identified students' learning needs.Prepared lesson plans for 3rd grade to 5th-grade students.Provided one-on-one tutoring sessions for kids aged 9 to 12.Assisted in the making of school projects or homework.Evaluated students' progress and discussed it with the students and/or students' parents. Achievements The definition of "achievement" itself is a thing done successfully with effort. Thus, when talking about achievements in your resume, past tense should be used to emphasize that it indeed has been attained. Here are some examples of an achievement section in a resume written in the past tense: ACHIEVEMENTSDeveloped a new CRM method that boosted client retention rate by 25% in the last quarter.Spearheaded a new project for a new client that contributed to the sales revenue by 20% for the past month.Scouted new vendors with similar quality and successfully reduced cost by 10% by switching vendors in 2019. Awards This one is pretty obvious, isn't it? You have to receive the awards first before actually telling others that you have it. Here’s an example of an awards section in a resume written in the past tense: AWARDSReceived a runner-up position at the IGTMC competition in 2013.Granted full scholarship for Bachelor's program by the Ministry of Education of Canada in 2013-2017.Attained University of Toronto Excellence Award in Natural Science and Engineering in 2016. Finished education If you're no longer enrolled in an institution, the part explaining your completed studies in your resume should always be written in the past tense. Your completed projects or courses during your studies in this resume section are also described using the past tense. EDUCATIONNew York UniversityBachelor's in International Business | 2011-2015Specialized in entrepreneurial business strategies and management.Completed courses: Multinational Business Management, Financial Management, Integrated Business Outlook.Participated in the Hult Prize Competition in 2013. From the examples above we're sure you get the idea of how you can properly write those resume sections in the past tense. When to Use Present Tense in a ResumeThe ultimate cheat for implementing present tense in your resume entry is when the date range of the section ends with "- Present". Pretty straightforward, isn't it? The following sections of a resume are where you can apply present tense. Resume summary In this section, you normally communicate who you are as a professional, your career objectives, and highlight your skill sets. It is usually placed on top of the resume and acts as an introduction to the company you are applying to. Here is an example of a resume summary using the present tense: Ethan LienzSenior Field Application Engineer | +500-7889243 | [email protected] | LinkedIn: Ethan LienzA technology-enthusiast specializes in AI development with certification in Python. A problem-solver with 7 years of experience in the smart security system. Adept at working with a multicultural team and collaborating cross-functionally. Passionate for providing the best all-rounded surveillance solution. Looking forward to expanding my expertise in the cyber security field. Current job When elaborating about your job duties and responsibilities in your resume, writing them in present tense makes the most sense. Write them in bullet points and begin each sentence with a strong action verb using the present tense to make an accurate and impressive resume. WORK EXPERIENCESenior Field Application Engineer | CTV2020 - PresentCollaborate with the sales team, RD teams, and product managers to obtain accurate information on product application usage and system operation.Formulate product technical solution guidelines for sales team support.Troubleshoot system application on-site upon customer request.Conduct follow-ups on customers' activities and monitor possible new sales opportunities.Evaluate customers' feedback and requirements regarding product system application and administer the technical and functional aspects of the proposal accordingly. Ongoing education In this era of competitive job market, everyone wants to secure a position before they graduate, be it from high school, undergraduate, or graduate programs. This is the perfect opportunity to insert present tense verbs in your resume. EDUCATIONNational Taiwan UniversityBiochemical Technology | 2022 - presentExpected to graduate with a Bachelor's in Science in June 2023.Specialize in Applied Microbiology and Biotechnology.Actively participate in the International Student Association's events. Ongoing projects Put your professional and personal projects that are still advancing in your resume using the present tense to show that you are doing more than just what your current role obliges. Keep in mind that the projects should also be relevant or support your skills.💡 Pro tip: You can also include what your role in the ongoing projects is. Here’s a sample of a projects section in a resume using present tense: PROJECTSRevamping a fin-tech client’s website contentRole: Part-time copy editorTimeline: March 2022 - presentDrafting financial aid packages for a newly-opened language centerRole: Financial analystTimeline: February 2022 - presentConsulting for a fin-tech startup companyRole: Project-based consultantTimeline: December 2021 - present When to Mix Past and Present Tense in a ResumeOn some rare occasions, you don't need to contemplate whether you should write your resume using the past or present tense. A mixture of both past and present tenses in one resume section makes perfect sense too. Sometimes when you have been working for a company for a few years you probably have done and accomplished various things, or even got promoted. In this scenario, you can list your achievements in your resume with the past tense and your existing duties in the present tense in your resume. Another possible scenario is where you successfully completed projects which you can elaborate in your resume using the past tense. But since your daily duties remain the same, you can illustrate them under the work duties section of your resume using the present tense. For example: WORK EXPERIENCE Vertical Writer | Platos Publication Group2016 - present Responsibilities: Write 5-7 articles weekly, including but not limited to first-person reviews, SEO roundups, trend-based features in the healthcare industry.Review and edit article drafts, as well as provide feedback for junior and freelance writers.Observe, listen, and analyze trends to brainstorm fresh weekly content that aligns with the brand and company's objectives.Conduct research and interviews with industry experts, leaders, and influencers.Assign article topics and organize publishing dates. Key Achievements: Winner of the 2019 Young Writer of The Year Award for the public health category.Presented a seminar and led a journalism workshop for aspiring journalists at Columbia University in 2018.Still unsure what tense should your resume be in? Should a resume be in the past tense or present tense? The answer is, both past and present tense can be used in writing your resume. And same goes with a CV if you're wondering what tense should a CV be written in. The most important thing is to use it properly and accordingly. Created by CakeIn this article, you will learn about:Step 1: Pick the best layout for your programmerresume.Step 2: Choose the right format for your programmerresume.Step 3: Start with contact information and basic personal details.Step 4: Create a programmer resume headline.Step 5: Craft a programmerresume summary.Step 6: Include skills and abilities relevant to the job.Step 7: Highlight your best experience and accomplishments.Step 8: List educational qualifications and background.Step 9: Add an extra section to highlight personal traits.Step 10: Craft a convincing programmer cover letter.Programmer resume sampleWithin the computer science field, three key professions play a huge part in designing and developing computer software: programmers, software developers, and software engineers. Oftentimes, you will find a programmer, a developer, and an engineer referenced as one another due to their shared focus on building computer software. While there are many similarities, keep in mind that the programmer solely focuses on the codes, the developer hubs around the design and setup, and the engineer manages the overall results for software development. If you find yourself a stickler for flawless coding, you are compatible with a programmer role. As a programmer, you might be responsible for: Searching for errors and help adjust and debug the coding.Creating and writing codes that are reliable and operational.Reviewing and optimizing code. Before you can work on the coding for the software team, you will need to write a professional programmer resume (or programmer CV). Whether you are building a java developer resume, a game programmer resume, a web programmer resume, a statistical programmer resume, etc., the following steps will help you perfect your computer programmer resume.Step 1: Pick the best layout for your programmer resume.Just like in the coding world, quality is more important than quantity for resume writing. ✏️ Note the following things:Keep your resume at a page’s length.Keep the layout design as reader-friendly as possible for the recruiter by setting the font size between 10-12 pt. and choosing simple fonts such as Arial, Times New Roman, etc.Ensure your programmer resume has one-inch margins on all four sides and the line spacing is between 1.2-1.5.Save your computer programmer CV as either a Word document or PDF file (more recommended). Step 2: Choose the right format for your programmer resume. The format of your programmer resume determines how you will present your background to the recruiter, and it varies based on your experience level and the sections you want to emphasize. Chronological resume formatMost commonNot suitable for a programmer with no experience writing the resume Functional resume formatFocuses on your knowledge and skillsNot suitable for experienced job applicants (such as one creating a senior programmer resume) Combinational resume formatFocuses on both experience and skillsYour resume can be quite lengthyStep 3: Start with contact information and basic personal details. To ensure that you have all the necessary personal information listed at the beginning of your programmer resume, review the following checklists: You should include these:Full NameProfessional TitleEmail AddressPhone NumberAddress (optional)LinkedIn URL(optional)Personal Website (optional)You should not include these:Date of BirthSexual OrientationRaceReligionMarital StatusSalary Step 4: Create aprogrammerresume headline. The headline will be one of the very first sections the recruiter reviews to decide if your programmer resume is worth reading. So make sure it is attention-grabbing. ✅3 tips on writing an eye-catching resume headline/title: Use capitalization for the headline of your programmer resume so that the recruiter can easily spot it.Avoid oversharing all your strengths by limiting the headline of your programmer resume to 10 words or less.Write a tailored headline for the specific programmer resume, either a python developer resume or a PLC programmer resume, you are creating. Example Headlines for a Programmer Resume: For a software programmer resume:Agile Software Programmer Specializing in Developing Desktop and Web Applications For a junior programmer resume:Passionate Junior Programmer Analyst Skilled with SQL and Scripting Languages For a CNC programmer resume:CNC Programmer with 5+ Experience Working with CAD/CAM Software Step 5: Craft aprogrammerresume summary. The summary of your programmer resume gives the recruiter an in-depth view of what experience, proficiencies, and attributes you possess that are compatible with the programming position.✅3 tips for writing a compelling summary statement: Build your programmer resume summary by starting with a powerful adjective or your job title. There is a certain pattern to follow for creating a successful programmer resume summary: begin your summary with an adjective, followed by impressive work experience, and finish with a short list of programming skills for your resume.Avoid any bugs or unexpected errors in your programming resume summary by proofreading a few times. It is recommended that if you are developing an experienced programmer resume, such as a senior programmer resume, you should incorporate a strong summary statement. Otherwise, if you are forming an entry-level programmer resume, such as a student programmer resume, you will want to consider writing a career objective for a programmer instead. Programmer Resume Summary Examples:For a software programmer resume:Software programmer with 3+ years of experience in coding, debugging, and testing. Proficient in various programming languages, such as Java, SQL, C/C++, etc. For a java programmer resume:Attentive java developer with 5+ years of experience operating JavaScript, PL/SQL, and Java/J2EE. Skilled in creating, debugging and testing, and optimizing application software and systems. For a SAS programmer resume:Analytical SAS programmer with 6+ years of experience utilizing SAS system for data exports. Proficient in Linux, SQL, and data-processing scripts. Step 6: Include skills and abilities relevant to the job.Regardless of the programming skill levels you write for your resume, start the skill section by deciding on how you will present your knowledge. Bullet lists:a basic outline of programming skills for your resume.Expanded bullet lists: in-depth outline of programming skills for your resume.Skills integrated with work experience: shows the relationship between your skills and work experience.A categorized skills section:showcases a wide range of computer program skills for your resume in an organized way.Programming Resume Skills Examples:Hard Skills:Data StructureAlgorithm CodingData VisualizationMathematicsFrameworkSource ControlDebuggingTestingConfigurationSoftware Image MaintenanceSQLC++PythonJavaScriptJavaXMLOracleCloud ComputingHTMLGitHubSoft Skills:CommunicationResourcefulnessProblem SolvingCritical ThinkingTime ManagementStrong Work EthicsCreativeLogicalAdaptableCollaborative No matter if you're a seasoned professional or a fresher, you can create a powerful programmerusing Cake. How to Prepare for a Google Interview

Created by CakeIn this article, we'll cover:What Is Google Looking for in a Candidate?Google Interview ProcessHow to Prepare for Google InterviewsGoogle is the ultimate goal for many software engineers. Aside from driving innovation around the world, Google employees can expect to be treated well and given lots of room for growth and creativity. They get to work with some of the brightest minds in technology and execute their creative vision. Engineering at Google is an invaluable experience and the first step is preparing for the Google software engineer interview. Google owes some of its success to being selective in their hiring process. They want smart people with relevant knowledge or experience, and the right attitude. Google is a fast paced and ever-growing company, and they need their candidates to be motivated and knowledgeable in addition to having specific skills. Google interview prep is a marathon and the interview itself can be stressful. The best way to prepare for the Google interview is to have a good plan and lots of practice. What Is Google Looking for in a Candidate? Before you dive into your Google interview prep, it helps to know which qualities the company looks for. Software engineers need to demonstrate advanced technical skills in coding. For this reason, Google technical interview prep is often the most time-consuming part. But Google also looks for soft interpersonal skills, since their candidates should have values and abilities that align with Google’s goals. Here are some of the qualities to review in your interview preparation for Google. 💡 Googleyness Google looks for candidates who they think will fit in with their company culture. They emphasize qualities like inclusiveness and creativity, and their goal is to enhance our daily lives. When preparing for a Google interview, review their company goals and their workplace culture. According to Laszlo Bock, the former vice president of people operations at Google, Googleyness qualities include fun-loving, intellectual humility, conscientiousness, being comfortable with ambiguity, and having made courageous and interesting life choices.Further reading:Learn all about Googleyness [+Interview questions samples] 💡 Technical skills When you apply to work at Google, your preparation for the coding interview should be your biggest focus. Google looks for applicants with good technical skills, but also a strong conceptual understanding, so reviewing the coding theory is also crucial. 💡 General cognitive skills General cognitive ability is also an important Google quality. They look for people who are curious and critical thinkers. Good problem-solving, reasoning, abstract thinking, and a learning drive will go a long way in a Google interview. 💡 Leadership skills Google is big on cross-functionality, and they look for applicants who demonstrate they can approach problems when they are needed. If you’re preparing for a Google interview, think of how you can demonstrate effective communication and productivity.Google Interview ProcessPreparing for a Google software engineer interview can be strenuous. There are multiple stages of a Google hiring process, which start with you demonstrating your technical skills and end with several in-person interviews to assess compatibility. Here are the steps to keep in mind while preparing for a Google interview: ✏️ Online assessments When you start your Google software engineer preparation, the first step you’ll need to work on is Google's online assessment. This is a coding test for recent graduates and interns. The test is a coding sample you must complete within an hour and a half, and experienced candidates can bypass this step. ✏️ Short virtual chats The next step is a brief virtual chat, typically over Google Meet. You’ll be given a few algorithm questions to solve on spot, but the interviewer will also ask questions about you. Don’t forget to review some basic interview questions like “Why did you apply to this position?” and “Tell me about yourself” during your interview preparation for Google. ✏️ Project work Sometimes, the Google hiring process will include a short project. When preparing for your Google software engineer interview, you might be asked to give coding samples or work on a case study. The information will be provided to applicants in advance and is an opportunity for you to demonstrate your problem-solving and coding skills. ✏️ In-depth interviews The best way to prepare for a Google interview is to focus on the in-depth interview portion. There are several interviews performed over the course of a day, and each interview covers specific topics, like technical or interpersonal skills. For this part of the process, coding theory and practice should be a major focus of your interview preparation for Google. ✏️ Decision Your interviewers will write recommendations after each interview and summarize your ability and their thoughts. The hiring committee will review these recommendations and make their decision before reaching out with an offer. If you’ve done adequate Google interview prep, then at this stage you can relax and be ready to celebrate! How to Prepare for Google InterviewsSince the Google interview process is grueling, it’s important to be fully prepared for the questions and problems that will come up. Preparing for a Google software engineer interview is a big commitment. It’s hard to outdo other applicants in the Google interview without preparation. ✅ Estimate Google interview prep time Your first step in preparing for the Google software engineer interview is to estimate the time it will take to cover the material. Look at areas in which you might lack knowledge or strength and analyze how much time you will need each week to devote to improving or reviewing. Your Google interview prep could be daily or on weekends depending on how much ground you need to cover. ✅ Prepare a roadmap Without a proper plan or good habits, it’s easy to forget or procrastinate and slack off in your interview preparation for Google. You, thus, need a carefully devised plan–your roadmap–, which will vary depending on how much time you have before the interview. Prepare for Google interviews in 6 months It’s less punishing to prepare for a Google interview in 6 months or more, as you can afford to spend some extra time studying theory more broadly and doing coding and interview practice. Once you are closer to the interview date, you can do mock interviews and rehearse answers to the most common questions. Prepare for Google interviews in 3 months If you need to prepare for your Google interview in 3 months, you should narrow your focus to a few key books or resources. Schedule time during weekends or off days to review material and study your chosen coding language. Increase the time you spend preparing for a Google interview as the date gets closer. Prepare for Google interviews in 1 month If you need to prepare for a Google interview in 1 month, your roadmap should set aside time every day to solve coding problems, using your days off to study theory. Pick a few books in your coding language and do some mock interviews in the final week before your date. ✅ Practice coding and system design The best way to prepare for a Google interview is to practice. There are many resources available and even some Google interview prep guides. Look for books, courses, videos, and online tools to help you study theory and practice coding. If you’ve applied to Google, the coding interview preparation will take the most time. 5 online coding platforms to practice coding and help with your Google technical interview prep:Coderbyte: In addition to coding challenges, they have tutorials and videos to help with theory for your Google interview prep.TopCoder: As one of the first programming platforms, they offer weekly coding challenges.LeetCode: This platform has a mock interview section, great for preparing for a Google interview.Codewars: You can see a discussion and solution for each coding challenge.CodeChef: This platform lets you enter coding contests with other users. But there will also be interviews focusing on your soft skills with behavioral questions. General cognitive ability is a Google quality, and some questions will assess your soft skills to determine your intellect and fitness for the company. These questions will be more general, so when you’re preparing for a Google interview, think about your goals and experiences. There will be team-centered questions, like “Do you prefer larger teams?” or “How do you approach a teammate who is hard to deal with?” Some questions will be about your leadership skills and some, about product management. The best way to prepare for Google interview behavioural questions is to think of specific situations where you have demonstrated a skill Google is looking for. For example, a time you successfully led a team or approached a problem.💡Tip:During your Google interview prep, rehearse your explanation of the situation and emphasize how your skills made an impact. ✅ Do mock interviews A mock interview will go a long way to help you prepare for a Google software engineer interview. Some people prefer to film themselves as they practice, in order to review their pace, body language and overall delivery of their answers. Prepare a list of questions you think will come up and rehearse your answers. Play back the video and look for things you can improve on. 5 Tips to Build a Strong Machine Learning Resume

Why the future is in favor of machine learning engineers Artificial Intelligence (AI), machine learning, deep learning, and data science specialists are professions that are representative of the 21st century. Today, whenever you drop them into conversations, you’re most likely to hear them being described as either the coming of the apocalypse or of new revelations, depending on the narrator. What’s certain though, is that AI can have a huge impact on the human race. Fact is, we’re heading towards a future wherein technology can supposedly understand us better than we do ourselves, and this is made possible by machine learning and AI. According to Linkedin’s 2019 report, job openings for machine learning have grown 96% with $182,000 being the median base salary per year —meaning, machine learning engineers are highly sought after. Another study conducted by Analytics India Magazine reveals that there are more than 78,000 job vacancies in the Machine Learning and Data Science fields in India. Further Reading:5 Useful Resume Tips to Help You Get a Foreign Job from India Machine Learning and AI were heavily discussed at the recent Davos 2020. One message rang clear at the forum— AI, machine learning, deep learning, and data science specialists have increased exponentially in recent years. Machine learning has been radically changing our work landscape today. In fact, it is being touted as a tool that will help propel us into the future, transforming almost each industry it passes by along the way. Robotics and artificial intelligence will permeate almost every aspect of our daily lives by 2025, and also comes with huge implications for a range of industries such as health care, transportation and logistics, customer service, agriculture, finance, and home maintenance, among others. Moreover, the tech giant Accenture believes that AI technology can boost businesses’ productivity by 40%. If these don’t guarantee a brighter future, I don’t know what will. I hope this piece of news hypes machine learning engineers up. 5 Tips for Writing the Perfect Machine Learning Resumes 5 tips for writing the perfect machine learning resumes Resumes are much more than a collective hodgepodge of skills and experiences, so you should organize them accordingly in order to tell a persuasive story with you as the protagonist. Keep it concise and to the point while pointing out why you’re the best candidate for the job. On average, it only takes HR managers at most 30 seconds to filter resumes. So if you fail to impress them in those precious 30 seconds, you can kiss your opportunity goodbye. So how do you pique their interest? Here are five tips to help you entice the HR managers with your impactful resume: 1. Choose a template that best showcases your experience Unlike creative-driven positions, clarity is key to a good machine learning resume— highlight your experiences clearly and concisely. Simply put, your resume should be easy to read; bonus points if you can make it aesthetically pleasing, but it shouldn’t be a priority. Generally, all resumes include the information I’ve listed below. Even if the order can be adjusted accordingly, I’d jot down the most important ones on the top if I were you. It’s actually not that much different from resumes written for other fields. Header— include the basics like your name, address, and contact information.Personal Summary— 3-5 sentences answering the question, “Why should you be hired?” should suffice.Relevant Experience or Projects— Highlight your accomplishments and duties in your previous jobs. Better yet, a Github profile or a Kaggle profile can definitely help boost your chances. Education or Certifications— Be it online courses or a university degree, list them all down to let companies know how much effort you’ve put in to stay ahead of the game. Skills and Languages— Take inventory of your skills and credentials that you haven’t yet explicitly listed, like programming languages such as Python, C, C++ or Java; NLP, etc..References— Include the contact information of two or three people who can provide insight into your work ethic and vouch for you. Professors work too. 2. Show, don’t tell. Prove that you walk the talk As you may have read in other articles or experienced in real-life, too many superfluous adjectives (and verbiage in general) is not good. So, instead of jamming a three-hundred-word essay into your resume, let me help by showing you what a decent resume should be like. Resume Sample:Machine Learning, AI, Data Science Resume Sample:Data Mining, Machine Learning, Distributed System, Web Crawling These two examples are from Cake, both of top-notch quality compared to examples elsewhere. As you can see from both versions, a lot of concrete metrics and numbers are listed. These examples are also straight to the point, listing out experiences with big data tools, past projects, and published papers; They are also organized and not messy. Basically, these two tell what the writers have worked on and how well they’ve performed! Check out more Machine Learning & Data Analyst/Scientist/Engineer Resume Samples! 3. Customize your resume to the job descriptions A one-template-fits-all resume might save you a great amount of time, but you’ll likely end up spending more time applying for more jobs. You should customize and tailor your resume for each recruiter. But how do you make sure you’re efficient with the time spent customizing each of your resume? Easy. You can build a two-or-three page long outline that lists all of your certifications, courses, and projects— essentially everything that was covered on the previous tip. Next? Go through the job descriptions of your coveted jobs. Want to look like the perfect candidate who’s sure to be a competitive high performer but also relatable? Read the job descriptions carefully and match the tone. Clarity and coherency should always be your priorities. Remember that your resume will be first screened by the HR manager before being sent to the higher-ups, so using a lot of jargon may turn the initial screeners off. If you see some technical terms on the job description, then feel free to sprinkle in some to add more specific details. Once you know what they want, you can save a great amount of time in convincing HR managers that you’re the one they’re actually looking for. 4. Structure, structure, and structure Aside from keeping your resume clean and simple— I personally prefer a minimalist style with a touch of clarity. The secret to condensing your whole life story and accomplishments into a single A4 page is in organizing it well. You can separate each category into different sections: past experiences, completed projects, awards received, etc. When it comes to your work experience, you can opt to list them chronologically. But remember, don’t list them all. You should only choose to showcase your most impressive works. That being said, you’ll need to strike a balance between quantity and quality. Most importantly, bullet points can help you tell a story better than huge chunks of texts. 5. Don’t downplay your success Here’s a question for you, when does imposter syndrome strike the hardest? A. Meeting your partner’s parents, B. Writing or updating your resume, or C. Leaving your comfort zone. Personally I’d choose B. If you’re Asian, please throw humbleness out of the window for a second—You can have it back once you finish writing your resume. Then, go ahead and brag about your accomplishments as much as you want. A word of caution, honesty is the best policy: You can highlight your exceptional accomplishments, but don’t lie about things you’ve never done. 3 Tips for Your Version 2.0 Resume The final touches on your version 2.0 resume— you’re onto the home stretch! Here are a few tips when you’re writing resumes in general. These are equally important even though they’re not specifically for machine learning engineers. So, grab a pen and note these down! 1. Use the active voice. Passive sentences sound awkward and take up too much real estate on your page. 2. Have your friends or someone you trust look it over. Once you’ve dotted all the i’s and crossed the t’s, you can find someone reliable to check your resume for you. If they’re not familiar with machine learning, that’s fine, you can get really honest and useful advice from outsiders as well. 3. Leave some empty space. It can be suffocating to read a resume filled to the brim with words so resist the urge to fill every square inch of your resume with text. Closing Thoughts To the kind souls who are still with me, I hope you’re finding this article useful. Companies today are hard-pressed to find good machine learning talent. For certain roles, you might need a specific skill set; some skills though, are quite universal. Needless to say, companies are looking for talents who already possess a diverse set of skills, knowledge of different theories, and programming ability. Some other basic requirements also include a good understanding of mathematics, analytical thinking skills, and problem-solving skills. With all that said, it’s time to get working and tailor your resume! If you’re looking for more inspiration, Cake is not only easy to use, but it’s also a treasure trove for an excellent array of sample resumes. Congratulations! You have built a strong resume. Although there are scholarships that are awarded purely through simple applications or based on academic merit, high-value awards often require scholarship motivation letters. As scholarships are highly competitive and limited in number, expressing your motivations for scholarships clearly and effectively is key to being considered. Along with discussing your desire for the award, application letters for scholarships are an opportunity to present yourself as the ideal ambassador for the university, convincing the scholarships committee you will uphold the commitments of the scholarship. In this article, we discuss tips for writing motivational letters for scholarships, as well as a sample motivation letter for scholarships.TABLEOFCONTENTWhat Is a Scholarship Motivation Letter? Scholarship Motivation Letter Format 7 Tips for Writing a Scholarship Motivation Letter Scholarship Motivation Letter Sample ConclusionWhat is a Scholarship Motivation Letter? Scholarship motivation letters are akin to cover letters in job applications; they are an opportunity for you to express your desires, interest and commitment towards the degree or program to the scholarship committee. Motivations for scholarship beyond financial gain is what committees want to award. As scholarships are often limited in number, and academic merit alone does not equate to motivation and commitment, scholarship motivation letters play an important role in refining and selecting awardees. Typically, a scholarship motivation letter covers these two basic principles: Why you are a good candidate: Many scholarships have an ethos or criteria which needs to be satisfied in order to be considered. Aside from simply fulfilling requirements, motivation letters for scholarships need to express how you embody values or would make an ideal ambassador for the university. Motivational essays for scholarships are an opportunity to share your interests and goals, which might not be included in regular applications. What you would do with the education:Universities want to provide scholarships to candidates who are interested in and committed to their desired degree or program. Since scholarships can be highly financially beneficial, universities want to make sure that the applicant genuinely wants to study there rather than being purely interested in receiving a free or discounted education. Scholarship motivation letters should therefore include specifics on how the program will equip you for your professional, educational or career goals. Format of a Scholarship Motivation Letter University scholarships have required criteria as well as a prompt or question for the motivational essay for scholarships; systematically and clearly answering these is key to the success of your application. Therefore, the structure of your scholarship motivation letter should be well thought out in order to properly answer the prompt. Here are our tips for planning your application letters for scholarships format: Greeting As with any formal letter, your scholarship motivational letter should be addressed to the appropriate person. The recipient might be listed on the scholarship or program website, but if there isn’t one, address it to the scholarships committee or relevant department. Introduction The way you introduce yourself in your scholarship motivational letter does not have to be basic or boring. Depending on the program and degree level, you can include more detail about how your background has led you to apply to this scholarship. Here are examples of introductions for scholarship motivation letters:Sample motivation letter for undergraduate scholarship: My name is Jane Johnson and I am excited to apply to the Department of Computer Engineering at Jamestown University. As my ultimate career goal is to work as a software engineer, I believe the opportunity and support offered by the Jamestown Women in Engineering Scholarship will allow me to flourish both academically and professionally. Scholarship motivation letter for masters: As a recent psychology graduate, I am delighted to be able to apply for the Jamestown University Clinical Psychology Graduate Program to continue my progression towards becoming a clinical psychologist. My research interest and previous education has made me well-prepared for professional training, and I would be delighted to be supported by Jamestown through the Graduate Ambassadors Scholarship. Motivation letter for PhD Scholarship: I am writing to express my interest in the Jamestown University PhD program in Neuropharmacology. My combined education of a Bachelor of Psychology and a Master’s degree in pharmacology has piqued my interest in applications of pharmacological sciences, and I would be honored to be supported through the Jamestown PhD Scholarship. Body Paragraphs The body paragraphs of a scholarship motivation letter should systematically address how you fulfill the objectives and criteria of the scholarship, as well as why you want to study that particular program or degree. You can mention your achievements, experience, interests or goals you want to achieve through studying at the university in your motivational letter for scholarship applications. Depending on the type of degree, here are ideas of what to include in motivation for scholarship letters: Sample motivation letter for undergraduate scholarship paragraph ideas: How your interests align with your ideal majorExtra-curricular activities which uphold university valuesWhat you want to do with your education after graduation Paragraph ideas for scholarship motivation letter for masters: What elements of your undergraduate major you would like to continue studyingHow the professional or practical elements of the program will help you career-wiseYour interest in a specific/unique course or Professor’s research area Motivation letter for PhD scholarship ideas: How your education has led you to a unique research nicheSpecific facilities, techniques or technology offered by the instituteInteresting aspects of your Master’s thesis you wish to elaborate onConclusion Wrap up your scholarship motivation letter by reiterating how you reflect the criteria for the scholarship, as well as how your education and achievements will allow you to contribute to the university. Assert your interest in the program and thank the readers for their time and consideration. Sign off Finish a scholarship motivation letter with a formal sign-off such as “Sincerely” or “Regards”, then your full name. Since a scholarship motivation letter is usually attached to an online application, it's not necessary to include contact details.Tips for Writing a Scholarship Motivation Letter Now that we have established the format and content of a motivational essay for scholarships, here are extra tips that can help elevate your application: Research the scholarship and scholarship provider: Although scholarships are often listed clearly on the university website, having a thorough read-through of the scholarships you are eligible for will provide you with more detail on the award and its’ provider. Although universities have their own scholarships, many are awarded from an adjunct institution or organization or are even donations from specific people. Knowing these small details can help you adjust the angle of your motivation for scholarship letters and showcase your commitment and interest in the university. Tailor your scholarship motivation letter: Just like resumes, scholarship motivation letters should be tailored to the relevant program or institution. Including how specific university values, research interests, facilities, etc. align with your personal and educational goals will highlight not only your motivation for scholarship but motivation towards being admitted to the program, which universities will want to award. Having a generic scholarship motivation letter might come across as rushed, disinterested or that you’re only motivated by the financial benefits of a scholarship. Avoid informal language: As you are applying to a university, having a well-written motivational essay for scholarships is essential. Formal language shows your seriousness and professionalism and can also be an opportunity to showcase your writing skills as well. Common uses of informal language to avoid in your scholarship motivational letter include: Using contractions – use “I am” rather than “I’m,” etc.,Using slangUsing inappropriate or excessive symbols (, ! emojis, etc.)Acronyms, unless they are specific to the relevant university or programPhrasal verbs – use concise and formal words instead of commonly spoken phrases e.g., say “many” instead of “lots of”, “most suitable” instead of “best” Present logical arguments: A motivational letter for a scholarship is essentially an opportunity to provide a convincing argument as to why you are the most suitable candidate. Making logical, sensical arguments is also a skill required in academia and research; therefore, showcasing this skill is valuable in scholarship motivational letters. Here are examples of logical and illogical arguments you might make when writing motivational essays for scholarships: Logical argument: I graduated with honors in a Bachelor of Engineering, and I strive to further advance my Engineering skills through the Jonestown Masters of Engineering program. Likewise, I actively participated in the Engineering Society throughout my undergraduate degree and reflect on the Women in Engineering scholarship value statement of “achieving excellence together.” Illogical argument: Previous scholarship winners have made significant contributions to their research field; if I am awarded a scholarship, I will too. Show your Gratitude: A scholarship is a competitive award that few applicants are eligible for, therefore, thank the relevant department, sponsor, or donor in your motivation letter for scholarships to show gratitude for the opportunity. Financial sponsors might be reviewing applications and could read your motivational letter for scholarships that they award. Stick to the word limit: Sticking to the guidelines for motivational letters for scholarships is essential. Strict review committees might not read all of your essays or might skim through it if it is too long. Writing a succinct, clear motivational letter for scholarships has more impact and shows your writing ability as well. Typically, motivational letters for scholarships will have an approx. 1000 word limit, or a maximum of 1-2 pages. Have a well-rounded answer: Although it might seem like the best way to write a motivational essay for scholarships is to list off academic achievements, having well-rounded essays will give you an advantage. Undoubtedly, many of the applicants will be high achievers; including extra experiences such as internships, employment, or societies which contributed to your motivation for the program in your motivational essays for scholarships will show the committee that you are interested in more than just financial gain.Motivational Letter for Scholarship Sample See our motivational letter for a scholarship example here. Take note of ways you can succinctly but clearly discuss and convince a scholarship committee to consider your application when writing your own application letter for scholarships.Motivational Letter for Scholarship SampleTo the Scholarships Review Committee, As an alumni of Jamestown University, I am delighted by the opportunity to continue my academic studies with Jamestown through the Masters of Data Science. My goal for the Masters program is to work with the supervision of Dr. Anna Lytics, as her undergraduate teaching piqued my interest in data science. I consider Dr. Lytics to be a professional role model, and with her encouragement I write to apply for the Women in STEM scholarship program. Graduating with an honors in the statistics major for my undergraduate program allowed me to gain strong foundational knowledge in statistical analysis in science. However, my interest in data science strengthened through taking elective courses Data Algorithms and Data Decisions with Dr. Lytics. I believe that data science will pose a new exciting opportunity to challenge my knowledge of statistical analysis and apply my skills in new contexts. Additionally, data science involves utilizing technology for innovative applications, such as methods of computer science, coding and programming, and therefore requires collaboration. I believe this can be achieved with the network of the Women in STEM scholarship program, which will foster an environment for women like myself to thrive. I am particularly interested in pursuing a thesis in data decisions with the advisory of Dr. Lytics. Dr. Lytics is not only a role model of a high-achieving woman in STEM, but she also has pioneered the industry and research niche of data decisions. I had the pleasure of working on a winter vacation internship in Dr. Lytics’ lab, where I gained insight into data decision processes. This allowed me to confirm my interest in the research speciality, but also to be encouraged that a successful career as a woman in STEM was achievable. Aside from academic advantages of the Women in STEM program, I am drawn towards the program's values – innovate, advocate and appreciate, as I am personally passionate about women in STEM. During my Bachelor’s degree, I founded the Jonestown University Society of Women Statisticians, and hosted free tutoring sessions for students struggling with statistics across all disciplines. In just 4 years, the society is the 3rd largest STEM society at Jonestown, and offers hundreds of hours of free tutoring every year. Being given the opportunity to continue advocacy for women in STEM through the scholarship program would not only maintain the program’s values, but allow for elevation in similar Jonestown STEM societies. Overall, my experience, passion and education has allowed me to develop my interest in data science as a research niche and career. I believe I support and practice the values of the Women in STEM program and would be delighted by the opportunity to join the community. Finally, I would like to express my gratitude to the Scholarships Review Committee, as well as the Organisation for STEM Equality for generously providing the award. Thank you for your time, Sam Pilsyze Conclusion Overall, a motivation letter for scholarships should include well-rounded information on how you reflect the degree or scholarship's values. Universities want to award those who they believe will benefit their department and provide innovation, publications, and quality. Tailoring an application letter for scholarships allows you to directly answer the prompt, and expressing gratitude will give your motivation letter for scholarship applications a personal touch.
