L'Oréal—A Century of Beauty, Innovation & Global Impact, Is Looking for Talents to Join & Shape the Future of Beauty

From its humble beginnings in a Parisian laboratory to its global presence today, L'Oréal has continually revolutionized the beauty industry, setting new standards for quality, sustainability, and inclusivity. Let’s explore the world’s biggest beauty company, its history, mission, and impact—L'Oréal.Table of Contents The birth of L'Oréal: An Adventure of Beauty The route to Asian beauty: L'Oréal Malaysia Work-Life at L'Oréal Malaysia Explore L'Oréal Malaysia’s Key Departments SeedZ Management Trainee Program The birth of L'Oréal: An Adventure of Beauty The history of L'Oréal dates back to the early 20th century when French women were hesitant to dye their hair due to the toxic nature of the dyes; Eugène Schueller, the founder of L'Oréal saw an opportunity and decided to venture out on his own. The history of L'Oréal traces back to the early 20th century, a time when French women were hesitant to dye their hair due to the toxic nature of available dyes. Seizing an opportunity, Eugène Schueller, the founder of L'Oréal, decided to venture out on his own. Eugène began his experiments with hair dyes in a rented laboratory in Paris, laying the foundation for what would become one of the giants in the beauty industry—L'Oréal. With its strong commitment to technological advancement, research innovation, and delivering high-quality products, L'Oréal has evolved into a top-choice brand with beauty products catering to people of all ages and ethnicities. The origin of the name L'OréalThere are many variations about the name L'Oréal and how it started. Some said it originated from L'Auréale, Eugène's first hair dye, while others believed it was named after the gold and warm shades that the French women wanted for their hair back then. There's also speculation that the name was derived from the Greek word "ωραίος"/oreos/, which translates to 'beauty'. In 1939, L'Oréal became the official name of the company, coinciding with its headquarters establishment at 14 Rue Royale, Paris that year. For over 110 years, the company has devoted itself solely to one business: creating beauty, from their first hair dye in 1909 to today's cutting-edge beauty tech products and services. "Beauty is our DNA. Our mission is to offer each and every individual on this planet the best beauty solution in terms of quality, efficacy, safety, and responsibility."—L'Oréal Malaysia. Nowadays, L'Oréal, with its presence in 150 countries, creates 37 brands to provide solutions to everyone: for all skin and hair types, all genders, all identities, all cultures, and all ages. "We believe that diversity, equity, and inclusion are the driving forces behind innovation, inspiration, and ambition, which enable us to create beauty that moves the world," said Indra—Young Talent Manager at L'Oréal Malaysia. L'Oréal provides a range of products and services, in categories such as makeup, skincare, hair care, hair dyes, and fragrances. The route to Asian beauty: L'Oréal Malaysia Founded in 1995, L'Oréal Malaysia is based in Kuala Lumpur with a dedicated team of individuals who share the same "can do" spirit. The team has successfully promoted 14 brands owned by L'Oréal, offering the most technologically advanced products in every beauty category. These products are made available through mass-market channels, department stores, and salons. Entering a diverse country like Malaysia, the company keeps diversity, equity, and inclusion at its heart with long-term philanthropic initiatives, including "For Women In Science," "Beauty For A Better Life," "Citizen Day," and "Women in Business." Not to mention, L'Oréal Malaysia is committed to minimizing the impact of its activities on the planet and creating a positive socio-economic impact on the people and communities in Malaysia. L'Oréal Malaysia now has more than 800 employees and workers and is like a start-up driven by passionate individuals with the "Malaysia Boleh" spirit. The company has been recognized and awarded for its products, marketing campaigns, and corporate social responsibility efforts. L'Oréal Malaysia has recently become a cluster with Singapore and is now known as L'Oréal MYSG since 2020. It is one of the markets with four complete divisions and 17 brands. In addition, the Malaysia branch is home to BEST, a shared service finance team that manages finance across Asia and the Middle East region. They believe that diversity fuels creativity and innovation. L'Oréal offices often feature open-plan layouts and collaborative spaces to encourage teamwork and communication among employees. Farina Situmorang on Founding AI Startup Pensieve Technology and Navigating Career Journey

Cake's Talent Connect is a monthly segment where we invite speakers to share their experiences in their field or industry. In this episode of Talent Connect, we invited Farina Situmorang, a prominent Indonesian entrepreneur (CEO and co-founder of Pensieve) who has made a name for herself in the technology industry. Despite her impressive credentials, Farina had to overcome numerous obstacles in order to achieve her goals. Whether you are an aspiring entrepreneur, a seasoned professional, or simply someone who is interested in the world of technology and innovation, Farina's story is one that is sure to inspire and motivate you.Table of contents:Farina's Path to Tech Entrepreneurship Lessons We Can Learn from Farina How Farina Founded AI Startup Pensieve Working Culture at Pensieve Technology Pensieve is HiringFarina’s Career In Tech: From Selling ATM Machines to Founding an AI Startup Farina's career in technology began soon after she graduated from the University of Indonesia. She started her journey at IBM where she held various sales and product specialist roles. Her first job was to sell ATM machines, which she succeeded at with flying colors. “My first job was to sell ATM machines. Though it’s 20 years ago if there's a broken ATM machine, I could probably fix it.” Farina mentioned. During her tenure at IBM, Farina gained extensive knowledge in the field of technology and honed her skills in sales and marketing. After a few years at IBM and Microsoft, Farina decided to pursue her MBA degree at Northwestern University - Kellogg School of Management. After graduation, Farina landed an offer to go back to her internship place at a company called BlackBerry. She worked for BlackBerry in their corporate headquarters in Canada for a couple of years before moving to Silicon Valley to work for a startup there. However, after being laid off in Silicon Valley, Farina's career took a turn when she returned to Indonesia to participate in the 2014 presidential election campaign. Inspired by the successful 2008 Obama campaign that used technology and social media to mobilize voters, Farina was fascinated by the potential impact of AB multivariate testing, a strategy she had experience with from her previous technology work. She worked for Mr. Jokowi in the presidential election campaign and eventually started her entrepreneurial journey by founding her own consulting company called Catalyst. At the end of 2020, Farina decided to leave Catalyst and start her new AI startup, Pensieve Technology. In the following sections of this article, we will delve deeper into Farina's story and explore the lessons that we can all learn from her experiences.4 Lessons on Navigating a Career from CEO Farina Situmorang 1. It's okay to be unsure Farina admits that she did not know what she wanted to do in life initially, and it took her years of exploration and trying different things to figure out her calling. “We as young people sometimes get too caught up and get too close-minded. Especially after you spent four years in school and you decided that, hey, I already studied this for four years and I have to make a career out of it. Remember that this is a decision that you made when you were 16 years old or 15 years old. You're trying to pick a major in college. Do you think you would do that for the rest of your life? That's impossible. Some people do choose the right thing, and maybe it's absolutely right for them. But most people still need time to explore.” She emphasizes the importance of being open-minded, trying new things, and exploring our talents. It's okay to be unsure about things and to test out different ideas before committing to a career path. By doing so, we can discover our true calling and achieve our goals. 2. Be open to learning from others Farina highlights the importance of having an open mind and being receptive to learning from others. She believes that mentors can be valuable assets in one's career journey, providing guidance, feedback, and fresh perspectives on various situations. However, finding a mentor may not always be an easy task, and you can still learn a great deal from others in different ways, for instance reading books, joining online classes, etc. “The most important thing is the mindset of being open to listening to ideas or asking questions. You don't necessarily need a formal mentor. Meaning like, I'm going to pick this person as a mentor and then it's great as a checkbox. No, the most important thing is if you go to an event, you meet someone interesting, ask them questions. And then if that develops into having a formal mentorship or relationship, that's okay, right? But the most important thing is to have that mindset first.” 3. Mastery is not a destination but a journey It can be easy to fall into the trap of thinking that we know everything there is to know about something after learning it for a period of time. However, Farina stresses that becoming a true master of skill is not something that can be achieved in a year or two, but rather something that takes years of practice and effort. “People get really bored in the middle because the increment of learning when you are in the middle is very small. You are going to stay in that medium zone for a while. And the middle is where most people give up. The middle is when people tend to just stay there and they don't ever become an expert or a Master, because it just takes time. And not enough people are willing to do that. Some people get bored and move to other things. That's why not everybody becomes Roger Federer. Because it takes that much time and every hour of your life to think about that one thing to become that great.” It's not necessary for everyone to become a Master in one specific area, but once you find something that sparks you can either continue pursuing that passion or reach a comfortable level of expertise and move on to exploring other interests. It's important to make these decisions consciously, rather than blindly or arrogantly assuming you know better. 4. It all goes back to self-awareness While it may be tempting to try to become an expert in many fields, focus on one or two areas that align with your strengths and interests. When we perform tasks that align with our strengths, we tend to find them more enjoyable and engaging, which can fuel our motivation and allow us to achieve greater success and fulfillment. “At the end of the day, it all goes back to self-awareness. Becoming more aware of who you are, and what you do best. The habits and the patterns that you have, the reactions, the emotions, the fear. It's going to make you better at your work, in your career, and also in your relationships once you understand yourself.“After years of building her career, gaining experience, and discovering more about life, Farina took a turn and established an AI startup called Pensieve. In the next section, we’ll unravel the story of when she stumbled upon a customer problem and turned it into a business opportunity. The Founding of AI Startup Pensieve: A Story of Seizing Opportunities Pensieve is an Indonesian technology company that specializes in big data analytics and enterprise-level software. Pensieve works with government agencies in areas such as defense, intelligence, and public services. It is similar to Palantir, one of the leading technology companies in the United States that originally worked with the US government before expanding to other areas. However, Pensieve focuses on the needs of emerging markets, such as Southeast Asian countries. These areas have different needs than highly developed countries like the US or Europe. Life's Unpredictability Led to the Founding of Pensieve When reflecting on the company’s establishment, Farina expressed that the timing, location, opportunity, and customer were all aligned perfectly. “To be honest, it's probably the right time, the right place, the right opportunity, and the right customer. Everything is just what you call everything falls into place. Yeah, everything falls into place. It's more like providence or serendipity.” Farina added. Having worked in the technical side of the industry, including consulting for government agencies, she stumbled upon a customer problem that Pensieve could solve. Farina acknowledges that she could have never predicted founding Pensieve, particularly given her background in fixing ATM machines. She advises that sometimes one must be open to what life presents. How Pensieve is Positioning Itself for the Future of AIOne of the most practical applications of AI that exists today is chatbots like ChatGPT. The emergence of chatbots is an exciting development because it opens up the possibility for endless features and products to be developed on top of it. This means that AI has the potential to evolve in many different ways, offering more creative solutions to solve customers' problems. Pensieve Technology is among the companies that recognize the potential of AI and utilize it to solve organizational issues in the government sector. The company's focus is on automating manual work and providing insights that would normally take hours of manual analysis. One of the notable projects that the company has undertaken is providing assistance to web three or blockchain projects for government EP procurement during the G20 summit in Bali. While the company cannot disclose much information regarding other agency-related projects, they have also developed prototypes for the Land Certificate Agency and provided assistance with intellectual property rights validation and traceability. Like any AI startup or technology company, they are constantly incubating ideas to keep up with the latest trends and remain competitive in the market.Work Environment at Pensieve Technology Accountability, Empowerment, and Trust At the foundation of Pensieve's work culture is a strong belief in accountability, empowerment, and trust. The team is trusted to do their best to achieve the set outcomes, and are encouraged to take the initiative and be proactive in achieving them. While questions and help are always welcome, employees are not restricted to only doing what they are told to do. Fostering Creativity and Learning in the Workplace Pensieve believes that physical interaction still plays a huge role in terms of creating the best work environment possible. “We mostly work from the office. Because we believe that interacting with people in the office creates ideas to be compounded." The company organizes Brown Bag sessions or sharing sessions where employees can share what they have learned about a particular topic. These sessions encourage learning and growth, and employees are encouraged to always think about how they can make things better. Prioritizing a Positive Work Culture Pensieve values collaboration and mutual support, and believes that success should not be achieved at the expense of others. The company wants its employees to feel empowered to succeed and recognize that they can contribute to the overall success of the company. As the job market becomes increasingly competitive, it's no secret that job seekers are looking for more than just a steady paycheck. Pensieve not only provides cutting-edge technology solutions, but also prioritizes a strong work culture that fosters creativity, accountability, and mutual support.“We are looking for high performers who do want to make things better. Because what I want everyone here is that they can be inspired as much as from me, from the people around them, and from the people they work with.” - Farina SitumorangPensieve is Hiring! Coming from different backgrounds with different stories to share, Gregor Fan-Plath, serving as Program Manager at Google Hardware Planning and Fulfillment, Yun Rou Lim, a Technical Program Manager at Google Pixel, and Keita Morisaki all agreed that Google Taiwan has helped them achieve their career aspirations and has provided extensive support in a well-rounded way. Gregor's Google journey spans three countries, from Ireland to Germany and now Taiwan. His decision to relocate to Taipei was deeply personal, as his family is partly from Taiwan, and they always wanted to come back and live here again. Gregor acknowledged that working in Taiwan presented unique challenges. “Two things that are the most challenging for me personally are communication is less direct, and people are used to being always available via messaging,” Gregor shared. Despite these differences, he finds the experience enriching and has learned new problem-solving strategies. “Google offers support for the whole family...we brought much of our furniture from Germany, which made us feel at home immediately,” Gregor shared. “Similar to what Gregor just shared, Google not only provided relocation support in terms of financial reimbursement for moving expenses, transportation costs, and temporary housing, I also received great consultation in finding my permanent housing, searching for schools for the kids, banking, and tax information,” Yun Rou added. Yun Rou’s journey to Taiwan was motivated by different factors—Taiwan’s captivating culture, delectable cuisine, and warm hospitality. Moving from Malaysia with her family, she works as a Technical Program Manager for the Google Pixel team. She proudly shared her role in helping the Google Pixel team build a whole ecosystem of Google’s phones and hearables, “The team focuses on bringing the best hardware, software, AI, and Google services, making our product helpful for everyone.” The Google Taiwan Pixel team is a business unit responsible for designing Google's phones and hearables to enhance users' experience. Keita, on the other hand, has quite a different story: he is embarking on his first post-graduation job, joining Google Taiwan as a Software Engineer in the Silicon Team. For him, the growth opportunity was a decisive factor in choosing Taiwan. As Google Taiwan is the largest hardware hub outside the US, Keita was eager to “...get to work with lots of talented people with various backgrounds at Google Taiwan,” he said. “When we think about big challenges, it’s usually much easier when we actually try it,” Keita advised fresh graduates. “If you join the team, we have a big international Googler group here; don’t hesitate to seek help and guidance. People love offering help and sharing their knowledge." The Google Taiwan Silicon team is responsible for developing mobile SoCs for Pixel phones to deliver the best user experience. The team collaborates with different offices around the world to develop several Linux drivers that enhance the system's performance. Charting the Future: Google’s Taiwan’s Expansion and Talent Prospects “Taiwan has a strong foundation in all aspects of technology, from software development to hardware manufacturing to infrastructure development,” said Milton Ribeiro, the Hardware Engineering Lead at Google Nest Taiwan, who has been in Taiwan for 27 years and has observed all aspects of the country. “Taiwan is the ideal site for Google’s extensive network infrastructure.” From its inception as a software engineering center back in 2006, Google Taiwan has evolved into the largest hardware hub outside the United States. Milton proudly reveals that Google Taiwan is now one of the largest sites in Asia, housing thousands of Googlers collaborating across 5 cities and boasting a diverse workforce representing over 35 countries. Adapt, Learn, Thrive: A Foreign Professional’s Journey to Success in Taiwan

In recent years, Taiwan has become one of the world’s top destinations for expatriates, widely recognized for its safety, excellent healthcare system, and thriving industries, especially in technology and manufacturing. However, relocating to Taiwan can still feel daunting for many global professionals. From navigating complex visa procedures to overcoming language barriers and competing in a highly skilled job market, the challenges are real. Adapting to a new culture, language, and workplace environment takes time and resilience. Jeffrey, a foreign professional who successfully built his career in both Taiwan’s academic and corporate worlds, exemplifies this adaptability. His journey offers valuable insights for any global talent aspiring to establish a rewarding career in Taiwan. From Engineering Student to Semiconductor Expert: Jeffrey's Career Evolution Jeffrey initially went to Taiwan to pursue his studies at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST). He entered NTUST through a principal recommendation from his high school for a Chemical Engineering degree. Leveraging a five-year fast-track program, he completed both his bachelor's (in 3.5 years) and master's degrees (in 1.5 years), establishing a deep technical foundation essential for the high-tech industry. He initially wasn't aware of Taiwan's booming semiconductor industry, and expected that he would get a job related to his major, like process engineering or manufacturing. His first exposure to the semiconductor companies actually came from career fairs at NTU and NTUST. This set the stage for a critical mindset shift: realizing that career opportunities often lie outside the narrow confines of one's academic major.Jeffrey's Overall Career Journey in TaiwanLanding a Job Post-Graduation To navigate the job market. Jeffrey actively sought information from career fairs, NTUST Office of International Affairs (OIA), and Indonesian Student Association (NTUST-ISA) seniors. His mindset was to look beyond his core major, applying to diverse companies and engaging in numerous conversations to understand how his fundamental knowledge could translate into marketable skills across different sectors. Adjusting to Work LifeJeffrey, who started his semiconductor career at ASML Jeffrey started his professional journey as a Customer Support Engineer at ASML, marking an intense shift from academic life to the demanding world of semiconductor engineering. His early days were filled with structural training quickly followed by hands-on equipment operations. New engineers in this field typically face a tough path to independence. Certification, which allows an engineer to work alone, usually takes between 8 months to a year due to the complexity of the technology. The work schedule itself is rigorous: engineers follow a demanding pattern of 12-hour shifts (7 AM–7 PM or the reverse), working three days followed by three days of rest. This intense 3-on, 3-off cycle is standard for the industry in Taiwan. Jeffrey, however, embraced the pace. He didn't just meet the expectations; he exceeded them. He sprinted through the training, mastering complex procedures and becoming fully certified in just six months, significantly faster than his peers. Beyond the work, he also enjoyed practical company benefits, like flight ticket subsidies. It's worth noting that some major companies offer significant relocation support for international hires coming from abroad. For instance, TSMC offers new employees 1-2 months of stay in a company dormitory along with housing search support, while ASML provides a 5-star hotel stay for two months, along with flight ticket subsidies. Unfortunately, as a Taiwan graduate, Jeffrey was not eligible for these specific international packages, but his local experience and network allowed him to manage the transition smoothly nonetheless. Career Growth Development After working for 2 years as a Customer Support Engineer, Jeffrey was promoted to a coordinator, where he managed a team of engineers that controlled the machines. He shared that at the time, due to lack of human resources, he handled 3-4 machines at a time, where the usual amount was 1 machine per coordinator, and he had to manage nearly 20 engineers. With his knack and efficiency and documentation, he took the initiative to create a detailed standard operating procedure (SOP) guidebook to streamline training and knowledge transfer for his incoming colleagues. Crucially, the frequent need to troubleshoot and make critical decisions during his shifts forced him to quickly develop into an independent problem-solver, a skill that proved invaluable in his subsequent career moves.Jeffrey alongside former ASMLCEO,Peter Wennink Strategic Career Switch Driven to move into a business and planning role, Jeffrey didn't hesitate to initiate a career switch. He moved to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) in Operation Resource Planning, secured through networking with a TSMC manager on LinkedIn. Even though his current role is corporate planning, his engineering expertise is his core advantage. His technical background as an engineer provides the structured, logical foundation and specific technical knowledge that allows him to accurately assess production priorities, forecast material needs, and understand technological limitations.Overcoming the Language BarrierJust like many foreign professionals, the language barrier was one of the biggest initial shocks for Jeffrey, especially since he hadn't planned on staying in Taiwan long-term. To adapt, he had to take College Chinese classes during his first year, some of them at night, after a long day of classes. Throughout his college days, some of his technical courses were conducted in Mandarin, forcing him to adapt quickly to the new environment. When he first entered the job market, he admitted he was still scared of speaking Chinese. One of the moments that became his major turning point was his first interview with TSMC. He initially used English in the first round, but the interviewing manager delivered a powerful message: if he used English in the next interview, it would become a serious concern. This experience was his pivotal realization that Chinese was essential. As Jeffrey reflects, "It's better to speak Chinese as much as possible, to be respectful, even if your Chinese is not that good." Now, working in a management and planning position at TSMC, Jeffrey notes that the demand for Chinese has only increased. As his role involves extensive collaboration with numerous internal and external stakeholders, from manufacturing teams to distributors, proficient Mandarin is non-negotiable for effective communication and negotiation. Jeffrey's experience has highlighted that learning Chinese is non-negotiable. Communication skills in Chinese are critical and can determine your career trajectory in Taiwan, so foreign talents in Taiwan should look into strengthening their Chinese skills.Building a Life and Finding Community in Taiwan Outside work, Jeffrey has also been building his life in Taiwan. Having lived for more than 8 years in Taiwan, Jeffrey admitted that he feels so comfortable in Taiwan that he even knows the roads of Taipei better than his hometown. Jeffrey also highlighted Taiwan’s exceptional practical advantages: a top-of-the-line National Health Insurance system and relatively low taxes that allow him to save more. Perhaps most importantly, he emphasized that Taiwan is extremely safe. "If you forget to take your motorbike key, it'll still be there," Jeffrey pointed out. "It's really safe for everyone." One key factor that supported his career journey in Taiwan is his community. For Jeffrey, community wasn't just social support, it was a vital source of networking and new opportunities. Through the association, he connected with seniors and external partners, gaining insider knowledge about various opportunities. Serving as the association's president had a particularly significant impact. This role not only deepened his connections with fellow Indonesians but also necessitated engagement with external partners, sponsors, and university organizations. This experience rapidly expanded his professional network and was crucial for developing essential soft skills, such as negotiation and problem-solving. This non-technical experience proved invaluable during his job search. Jeffrey remembers that the interview process with ASML heavily focused on this role, with frequent questions about how he demonstrated leadership and overcame difficulties as president. The story powerfully highlights how deep community engagement directly translates into desirable corporate skills and professional value. Jeffrey's Advice for Future Global Talents in Taiwan All in all, Jeffrey expressed that his decision to come to Taiwan was a good one. Living in Taiwan has been enjoyable, and the technology landscape in Taiwan is also more developed than that in Indonesia, enticing him to stay here and build his career for a few more years. For future foreign talents looking to work in Taiwan, Jeffrey offers three practical tips: Master the LanguageLanguage is power. Chinese can be a great plus point for you. Jeffrey stresses that even achieving basic proficiency, like HSK 3 or 4, is a significant career accelerator. He warns that even with good technical knowledge and skills, not speaking Chinese can be a fundamental loss for your potential. In short: Chinese skills can be a critical differentiator that can determine your success.Broaden Your HorizonsDon't limit yourself. There's a vast number of sectors out there, and he encourages foreign talents to many different companies and even exploring start-ups to discover where your skills are most valued.Jeffrey's own journey, reaching out directly to the TSMC manager via LinkedIn and landing a corporate role, proves that proactively chasing something, even if it seems out of reach, can make everything possible.Embrace AdaptabilityYour academic major is a foundation, not a cage. Use your background to understand the why and the how of any new role, be it corporate planning or something else entirely. Your most valuable asset is your ability to learn and adapt. Ultimately, Jeffrey's success is an inspiring story to build your career in Taiwan. His journey from going through 12-hour engineering shifts to a corporate planner demonstrates that technical skill is only the starting point. Ultimate success in Taiwan's competitive, yet welcoming, environment lies in actively building a robust local network through community involvement, fearlessly pursuing opportunities outside your comfort zone, and committing to linguistic and cultural fluency. By embracing these principles, foreign professionals can confidently navigate the challenges, unlock their career potential in high-demand industries like semiconductors, and build a fulfilling life on the island.Tips for Surviving as a Foreign Professional in Taiwan from Jeffrey Susanto Start Your Own Journey in TaiwanInspired by Jeffrey's pivot into the high-tech sector?
