Dawn Kum is an experienced educator and policymaker who has dedicated over three decades of her life to designing practical educational policies to ensure effective and safe learning for both teachers and students. From 1992 to 1996, Dawn Kum taught methodology courses to graduate education students pursuing teaching credentials at Claremont Graduate School.
From 2001 to 2006, Dr. Kum held leadership roles at Howard University, including serving as principal investigator for a $20 million Transition to Teaching grant. This initiative trained and mentored future educators, particularly mid-career professionals entering the teaching field. She also directed the university’s Professional Development Schools project, fostering partnerships between Howard University and the District of Columbia Public Schools.
In 2006, Dawn Kum became the chief executive officer of The Village Academy of Maryland, a nonpublic therapeutic high school she founded. Under her leadership, the school provided state-approved curriculum and behavioral support services for students with learning, emotional, and conduct disorders.
She is currently the president of Integrated Urban Solutions, LLC, a multidisciplinary consulting firm that helps design, build, and implement solutions for both private and public sector institutions. She is responsible for managing the company’s overall operations.
