
Texas-based trauma and critical care surgeon Dr. Jay Johannigman divides his time between serving as a surgeon for Matrix Providers at the Brooke Army Medical Center and teaching in the department of surgery at the F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine. Possessing more than three decades of clinical and academic experience, he holds an AB in biology from Kenyon College and an MD from Case Western Reserve University, along with several certifications, including a basic cardiac life support and advanced trauma life support certification. Beyond that, Dr. Jay Johannigman has received numerous teaching awards and honors, such as the Good Samaritan Hospital General Surgery Residency Adjunct Teaching Award.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Johannigman’s work has been closely tied with the United States military. Commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant into the USAF Reserves after graduating from Kenyon College, he held such titles as surgeon for the Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan, colonel for the Office of the Surgeon General USAF, lieutenant colonel for USAFR Medical Center, and deputy commander of clinical services for Bagram Air Base as active military personnel. Dr. Jay Johannigman was also responsible for establishing the Center for Sustainment of Trauma and Readiness Skills, or C-STAR, program to train military medical personnel to provide high-quality in-flight care. This program was a joint effort of the U.S. Air Force and the University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
