Akshay Garud is on track to graduate in 2025 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) with a degree in Bioengineering and a minor in Computer Science. At this distinguished institution, founded in 1867, Akshay is finely tuning his expertise at the crossroads of technology and biology. He is proficient in various programming languages, including Java, Python, and C++, and has extensive experience with technical tools such as Atom, R Programming, MATLAB Octave, and Node.js. He also utilizes Microsoft Excel, Onshape, Autocad, Autodesk Inventor, and Imagej, alongside skills in 3D Printing, API Testing, and Data Visualization. His academic prowess extends to a deep knowledge of Linear Algebra, Machine Learning, and Statistics. Akshay's theoretical training is well-complemented by practical experience through multiple internships. He has conducted groundbreaking research at UIUC's Gritton Lab, focusing on the neural responses of mice within AI-generated mazes, skillfully integrating his bioengineering and computer science knowledge. His internship at TrussHealth, a health tech startup, involved him in the application of artificial intelligence for improving patient monitoring, where he took part in developing web applications and conducting API tests. At Base Pair Inc., he immersed himself in bioinformatics, working on RNA-seq data processing pipelines and genomic data analysis, crucial areas for advancing medical technology. Beyond his rigorous academic schedule and professional internships, Akshay actively contributes to the UIUC community. He is engaged in the Biomedical Engineering Society and MedLaunch, participating in projects that blend engineering with healthcare innovations. Akshay's creative side is showcased through his involvement in the Illini Awaaz A Cappella Team, performing at diverse university events and enriching the cultural life of the campus. He also dedicates time to volunteering with HomeFirst Services of Santa Clara County, helping to provide essential services to people experiencing homelessness. His hobbies include hiking, basketball, and reading, which balance his academic and professional life. Additionally, Akshay's leadership and discipline are evident in his roles as an Eagle Scout and a first-degree black belt in Taekwondo.
